Can I over charge SLA's with my "dumb" charger?

I have been waiting till the light is Green.. checking the charger every 15 minutes till it's done. i would love to know I can stick it on the charger and go to bed. So far it's not taken over 3 hours to charge but one day it might and I might not feel like staying up.

"I have been waiting till the light is Green.."

It sounds like you have some kind of charge controller there. If you can unplug it before going bed you will save $ on your electric bill since most chargers draw some power in standby mode.

The charger has two lights, red and green.. no switches no buttons nothing. ( no owners manual or book) Your right obviously when it's green it stops charging the battery.. I guess I really want to know if this will hurt the charger. This charger is so cheap, it came with a slip of paper saying, "Always plug the charger into the battery first Then to the wall or you WILL fry your charger."

When I posted that after 12 am I wasn't thinking straight.. I could have asked the question better.

Generally speaking when the green light comes on the xharger turns off. One of hte problems with cheap chargers is the don't have diodes to prevent the battery from discharging through the charger. Yeah, I know it sounds stupid but it happens. Even on a Currie EZip cheapo charger they tell you not to leave it pluged in for a long period after the red lite turns green. I have tested this with both my SLA and lifepo4 packs using these chargers and it does lower the voltage more then if I had unpluged the charger as instructed.

a dumb charger will charge your battery to a fixed voltage and continue to deliver a charge -even if its a trickle charge. This kind of battery can shorten the life of a healthy battery. Then, eventually, when the battery has lost it's capability to take a charge, the continuous charge current may start to create some serious heat problems. Heat shortens your battery life.

a slightly smarter charger will charge your battery to a fixed voltage then turn itself off. This fixes the problem with leaving the charger on the battery and creating heat.

a great charger for battery storage, but totally unecessary for day to day use, is a battery charger similar to the 'Battery Tender' product, when it has completed its charge cycle, it switches into a float charge mode. Where the charger will continue to top up the battery as needed. This is a good way to store a motorcycle battery for the winter, cuz a typical motorcycle battery will loose as much as 5% of its charge per month.......most batteries that are stored for 3 to 5 months could benefit from this kind of charger, cuz the battery may discharge to deeply without it.
