27 inch steel Raleigh GP (1973), 250lb rider. E-Bike OK?
 

I have a 1973 Raleigh Grand Prix that rides well and considering its age and weight, its a nice bike. The same might well also apply to me, its owner, however, I don't want to push my luck. Ive noticed that almost all of the e-bikes I see use smaller wheels, sometimes not by much, but its significant. I would like to do a reversible conversion that made my bike able to go up hills with power assist, but most of the time, I like pedaling. Since over the years Ive invested a lot of energy in the gear train and rear wheel is the way I like it it seems like a front wheel hub would be the way to go. Currently, I have 27 inch wheels, with straight rims and to be honest, I don't think they are the original ones but honesly, I don't remember. Ive had the bike a very long time. I guess my main concern is this. A 27 inch wheel would seem to be good for speed on level surfaces but less desirable for torque. Also a hub with a motor has to twist very strongly and my wheels use quick release hubs. A front wheel fork does not seem as if its designed from the beginning, as a back wheel is, for the tourque that I would imagine a motor (or pedaling) putting on it and I am concerned that say, if I was on a hill and had to stop, then start from a cold start, the wheel could reach its limit or pull itself or get twisted out of the fork.

Thats probably unreasonable concern, but..

Suppose all of these problems are manageable, whats would people think is a good conversion kit for the bike and me? Speed isn't so important but weatherproofing, power and reliability is. I'd like a commuting-capable setup, although I am not commuting right now, I might be in the future.

I'd like to avoid buying or building another bike, if my current bike is convertable.

Edit: I've found the answers to most of these questions in other threads.. it seems convertible.. Are there any 27 inch narrowish rim front hubs out there?
