Bosch E-Bike Battery Warranties + Capacities
Hi all
I was typing this out as a reply to another users thread but thought it would be more easily found in a thread of its own for those searching. Information on battery specifics is fairly difficult to find so I thought I'd share what I know of the Bosch warranty.
The Bosch warranty on their batteries is actually quite specific. It is a 2 year warranty and it has to meet 2 conditions; The first is that it has not been cycled more than 500 times on aggregate, (ie 1000 half cycles, or 2000 25% discharge cycles). The second is that the battery does not hold more than 70% charge.
It is my assumption that Bosch make sure this warranty is consistent across all the bike manufacturers they supply too so they don't have to deal with variations from different suppliers. This information is sourced from my own translation of an Ave eBike manual from Germany.
My intuition is that the 70% figure comes from a lower-bound estimate of battery shelf life. If the battery still holds 70% then Bosch don't regard it as a failure but merely aged, basically in practise the battery is only under warranty if it goes pop and only holds a fractional charge due to defective cells.
Bosch have also introduced a new battery for 2013 which is 400Wh and available on the high end Scott bikes. Their current battery capacity is 300Watt/hours, about 8Ah if anyone wants to do the math (A 10Amp Hour battery = 36 Volts x 10 Ah = 360 Watt Hours.
Hopefully this can help people make an informed buying decision.
Kind regards
Greg
