Experience with New Generation Garmin Cad/Speed Sensor?
 

Has anyone had experience with the new type of Garmin Cadence/Speed sensor which band mount to the hub and crankarm? I continue to have speed dropout problems with my Bontrager Duo Trap dropping the signal as discussed in another thread. My Duo Trap Drops the speed signal with both my Edge 500 and 800. It is more pronounced with 500. I never had problems with the old GSC 10 which finally gave up. I am thinking of going with that sensor system.

I am using the speed sensor, but unfortunately I ride in a pretty open area of the state, lots of farms and very few overhanging trees, so rarely does my Garmin use the speed sensor. I can't comment on cadence since I have a Power2Max and it provides cadence data to the Edge. That said, so far I have not lost the signal from the speed sensor and as long as you wake up the sensor, I have never had a detection issue either. I wake up the sensors by rolling the bike out the front door then turning on my Edge.

Works fine for me. If you're using an older device like the 500, you'll have to change your ANT+ setting.

I have one. Other than setup, I haven't noticed a difference.

I've had mine since last summer, works great.

Grain of salt because I don't know what Garmin you have and they've undoubtedly changed their programming many times over the years.

But I think your Edge will use a speed sensor over GPS regardless of signal strength or how many satellites it can find. They consider the speed sensor more accurate and all the Garmins I've looked into have a set of preferences about where they'll take their data from when there are choices.

What happens if you lift the bike off the ground (outdoors) and spin the wheel?

I've been using both since the end of last summer (with and Edge 500) and have had minimal issues. Once in a while there's a dropout of the speed sensor (the Edge auto-pauses and then auto-resumes a second later). 99% of the time, they've been perfectly fine. They generally "wake up" in just a couple turns of the wheel/crank, but every once in a while they take 20-30 seconds longer than usual. Definitely worth the money.

Also, I agree with Seattle Forrest; according to what I've read, the Garmin head unit should be taking it's speed data from the speed sensor if it's present and active. It only uses satellite data for speed when it can't read the speed sensor (and, occasionally, to auto-set the wheel circumference).

I just posted about this. I just purchased an Edge and was paring the sensors, power meter, heart monitor and smart phone. When it came time to pare the speed sensor I couldn't get the 810 to recognize the speed sensor. The speed sensor is about a year old so I thought it might be the battery. I replaced the battery, the indicator light flashed green - red - green indicating that it had power. I replaced it on the wheel but when I rotated the wheel to pare the device the indicator light, which is supposed to flash green a few times, didn't flash and the 810 would not recognize the sensor. I repeated the procedure but still no luck.
Am I missing something?

Too obvious, this can't be it, but since you didn't specify -- you do have the magnet on the wheel spoke and the sensor on the chain stay and the magnet passes very close (2mm or so?) to the marked spot on the sensor arm, right?:)

No magnets - I don't have the C 10 I have the new one that attaches to the wheel hub. I found the solution thanks to Marcus Ti in another post. I was selecting the wrong option when paring the sensor.
