Thin fender options?
 

hi
i'm having trouble finding fenders that will fit my bike. I purchased these, http://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Cl...ad+bike+fender
but once mounted they rubbed against my breaks. It seems i have very little clearance under my breaks so i can't really use any of the the fenders that have to be threaded through the breaks/under the body.

any ideas for some light weight inexpensive fenders that may be thin enough to fit - or possibly not need to go through the breaks?

Break the mudguard in halves , so they dont have to fit under the Brakes; attach the 2 halves onto either side of the brakes.

Requires some fabrication aptitudes

thanks for the reply - the ones i've seen seem to fasten to the same screw as the breaks. So, if i was to break them in half they wouldn't end up working anymore since they wont have a way to connect to the bicycle.

..i may lack some of those aptitudes :/

Consider the SKS Raceblade Long mudguard set. These mount around, but not under, the brakes.

They're "pre-broken."

Thanks for the response. Those look pretty great. I'm going to look into them more. Seems like they're about 60$ on amazon which is a bit out of the price range.

Has anyone used the 'ass saver'? Does it actually do anything?

Show us some photographs and/or a high-quality description of your bike and setup.

If the fender interferes with the brake, I suggest you move it away from the brake. That may encounter the tire. But I'm forced to guess, since you provided no photos or description.

What bike? What tires? In what size?

We used the rack mounting stainless steel strips to bend a mount for the mudguard halves that is held by the brake Bolt .

LBS has Bin full of the strips. then you use the Bench-vise and a Hammer to make the bends ,
then poprivet the strips of mud guard on . perhaps you can Pay someone to do it for you?/

I have most of my bikes fitted with proper Mudguards ..

maybe you can buy rain pants and a jacket to catch the wheel spray.

road grime will make washing off your bike frequently more important without good mudguards

You might want to try these:

Those would allow a DIY approach. Buy the brackets, buy a set of fenders, and combine the two. Those are more or less the brackets that come in SKS and similar fender sets.

they used the rack mount brackets to bend those .. commonly a rack comes with right/left twisted pair

and the center bolt brackets they used . If DIY impaired , whip out that Plastic CC and order those..

then all you need to make is holes for little bolts to hold the cut halves on.

sorry for lack of pictures.. here are two of the back end of the bike it's a an older seiki - i dont know the model and havent been able to figure it out based on the serial number - which at this point may be mostly rubbed off.

and im thinking of just going with a single seat stem mounted fender like this instead of full runners since i can't fit them through the thin space between breaks and wheel. http://www.amazon.com/SKS-S-Blade-Re...ords=ass+saver

so in this case i'd cut the fender at the connection part (where it goes under the break) and then reattach on the other side to this metal reach around peice. ...interesting - though the bracket is more expensive than the fender set i returned was.

I don't know where exactly they rub against the brakes, but I would probably get my trimming shears and trim off the parts that rub the brakes until they fit right in.
