Bontrager Ant+ Speed/Cadence Sensor - Damned thing is ALIVE

I have a Garmin 800 (plus Garmin Vector Power) as my main cycling computer. But I had had a Bontrager 300 computer and Speed/cadence sensor before that (combo sensor) so I kept that installed as well. The Bontrager 300 just always shows speed and cadence, freeing up space on the 800 for all kinds of other stuff. It is particularly nice when in 'map view' as I can see speed, cadence, power, and 'distance to the next whatever' all at the same time.

Toward the end of my ride I suddenly wasn't getting anything (apparently) from my speed sensor as both my Garmin and BR300 devices read zero speed. The Garmin will read wheel sensor data if it is available, otherwise it uses GPS data. I adjusted the magnet sensor spacing - no luck. Interestingly, the cadence sensor was sending just fine (the Garmin will preferentially use Vector data for cadence, BTW). I figured that it was a battery problem - no big deal.

Today I replaced the battery and suddenly I could get speed data but no cadence - WTF? On the off chance that it was a bad (but new) battery I changed that again, and both seemed to work just fine. Then out for a ride and 2 minutes later, no speed. The Garmin dutifully told me that I wasn't moving (0 speed/distance, and no gradient information). Then about 5 minutes later the Garmin decided that, since I had gone 2-3 miles, maybe I was moving after all. So suddenly I was getting speed, distance, and gradient again from my Garmin. OK, that is nice.

I looked back down about 30 seconds later - no speed, etc. CRAP, what is going on here. A short while later there was the speed/etc data again. And a short while after that - gone. On the next cycle I saw what was going on. My speed sensor would (every once in a while) come alive for a few seconds and send data. That was enough to induce the Garmin 800 to start reading wheel sensor data again, that data would go away (or more properly stated, start appearing as zero rather than no data), and the Garmin speed/etc was gone again for a while. It was like the Bontrager Ant+ sensor would suddenly realize that I was getting useful information, and come back online just long enough to get the Garmin to start reading wheel sensor - then gone!

Damnation, that was irritating (and I am in the process of acquiring a new speed/cadence sensor as I liked having speed/cadence always there).

I don't have a bontrager, but I found my 705 was affected by spurious emissions from a cateye cyclometer I installed as a back up. They both work fine but not together, just a thought

I ran this pairing (no pun intended) for about 6 months without this problem showing up. So you would think not. OTOH, this same issue has been raised regarding "dropouts" in some ZWIFT configurations (where the existence of a Garmin Edge device can interfere with an Ant+ dongle's ability to receive data. So you never know.

The only other problem that I ever had was that I have had to re-pair the BR300 and cadence/wheel sensor a number of times. The pairing between Vector and Edge was always OK as was sensor and Edge. I've ordered a different sensor.

I gave up on the Bontrager 300 after 4 months ...it kept losing synch to the Bontrager wireless sending unit. It was picky in warm weather and pickier in cold weather. Replaced it with a Cateye wired computer which works every time.

I ended up ordering a Powertap Cadence/Wheel Sensor (Ant+) unit (Model 30321). After two shortish rides it seems to be very reliable. I liked the Bontrager integrated assembly better than the Powertap (where the two sensors are hardwired together by a 3-4 inch wire). OTOH, the Bontrager seemed to be constantly slipping out of position during rides (not constantly, but more than I wished) where the Powertap is not going to do that.

So this does seem to be simply a sensor problem.
