Speed not recording when on the trainer.

I have a Bontrager Duotrap speed/cadence sensor on my Trek Emonda and a Garmin 910xt. The 910xt recognizes the speed/cadence sensor but when I'm on the trainer is only picks up cadence. In the settings it is set to speed/cadence. Is there anything I need to set on the 910xt itself so it picks up the speed from the sensor and not GPS?

Turn off the GPS before riding the trainer?

I guess I did leave out that when I am searching for satellite I hit the enter button and select yes to the question "use indoors." This should turn the GPS off correct?

"use indoors" could well just mean that it doesn't look for gps.
