Using Android phone with Giant Ridesense
Got my 2016 Giant Defy Advanced Pro 2 on order. Currently I ride a hybrid Specialized Sirrus and keep my Nexus 6P phone in my pocket while I ride using the Runtastic - Road Bike Pro app. I'll have to double check if both the speed and cadence sensors are installed on the new Defy or just the speed. But either way what I'm looking to do is to see if I can still use the same app with the sensors. If I need to switch apps that's fine too.
1. Anyone have a favorite cell phone clamp for their bike? 2. What apps have you used with your built-in Giant Ridesense? 3. Any heart rate monitor suggestions? Tracking cadence and heart rate is new to me so I'm open to suggestions. |
Starting to partially answer my own questions :)
The Nexus 6P phone does not support ANT which is what the Ridesense sensors are. I would either need to purchase the Runtastic bluetooth sensors and use their app with my phone or to use the Ridesense and get a different computer. Likely best to try the Runtastic sensors and not have to purchase a new computer when a cell phone is plentiful. |
FYI the Runtastic sensors IMHO are overpriced, and any Bluetooth sensors should be able to pair with the app.
BTW I'm no expert on Android Phones, but this app would appear to enable ANT+ support on a Nexus 6P: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....antplus&hl=en |
Interesting that it might be capable to get ANT I'll check it out.
As for the sensors, a few of them are built in already, no? |
RideSense pairs with my Galaxy S5 and the built in Samsung S Health app.

I have a Android phone running 4.4.2 and I am using a Panobike cadence and speed sensor with Runtastic Road Pro. This combination seems to function just fine as far as recording the cadence stats. The Panobike sensor was not expensive.

how ???

FYI, S Health pics up my ANT+ HRM and uses it, it can also see my ANT+ power meter but can't get power or cadence from it.

how the hell did you do that ??? when I scan ant+ devices, SHealth does not find it...

I use Runtastic Road bike pro.
I heard cadence is not important. You get mph and pace is for runner but its one of the stat on Runtastic. I use Polar H7 for my HRM using BT. |

I hit scan and it finds it. Check and make sure your battery isn't dead in the RideSense sensor. Mine was dead when I bought the bike new.
When I replace the battery, I could see the tiny green and red LED flash when I was rotating the pedals and back wheel (it did the same with the original battery...) I have a Galaxy S6 and I can't make this work... I found another app (that I don't really like afterall) that did find the ridesense unit using a third party ant+ management tool (which is not compatible with S Health)... You are lucky that it works ! Good for you ! I can't make this work on my side... bummer... |
Says it's supported. Maybe you have ANT+ disabled on your phone.

got it !!!
yes, I did verify that the ant+ service was running in the phone...
after trying and trying and trying, I've remove the battery from the ridesense again, re-install the battery after waiting a little and my S6 picked up the ridesense sensor in a couple seconds, now have cadence and speed in S Health... :thumb: so yeah, giant ridesense does work with S Health... |
I order me the Wahoo cadence and speed sensor, the non magnet ones. It can do ANT+ and BT at the same time. I just bought me a Garmin 520 and will try out the ANT+ and Runtastic Bike Pro on my phone using the BT and see how things goes.
I have look at cell phone clamp on bike. The only one where you do a quarter turn snap on cost $50 with the case and the clamp. WOW! And its for the Samsung S6 or S7. |
