Anyone using a Lezyne Super GPS?
 

I'm looking for a replacement for my crappy Garmin 510, that loves to lose ride data. I've decided that for me at least, a touchscreen on a cycle computer is about the worse design possible. So I'm getting something else before I pitch my 510 into a creek.

The Wahoo offering looked promising, but I don't really want to have to use the phone's GPS.

The Lezyne Super has everything I'm looking for (Ant+ good sat reception, rechargable) and the ones that are missing (Strava Live, maps) are things I never use, but reviews are a bit lacking. Only 10 reviews on Amazon.

Hopefully I can use it with my Mio Link HRM sensor!

So does anyone here use this GPS, and if so, how do you like it. Is it easy to upload ride data to Strava?

Been using it for 6 months, including 15 hours 45 minutes on the dirty kanza this year. Overall I've been pleased. Like you, I don't need live mapping, etc., I just want something to pair to a speed/cad sensor and HR monitor and record my ride. Auto-upload to Strava was a little finicky at first but seems to be fairly smooth now.


I've had one issue that has happened on 3-4 rides (over 6 months) -- the distance display will suddenly add an insane amount of miles to my ride -- jump from like 35 to 105 or something like that.


Luckily, once the ride syncs with Strava, it gets auto-corrected because Strava uses the actual GPS data for its numbers.


I've emailed support, they confirm it is a hardware issue and they're working on a firmware update. Their advice is to stop using the Wahoo speed/cadence and HR sensors. I'm not sure if this is specific to Wahoo or all sensors. Anyway, that's stupid and I'm not going to do it. The whole point is to have HR and cadence data during the ride.


Also, they haven't updated the firmware since December, so I don't know how much continued support this product is getting.


The big reason I chose this instead of the Garmin 20/25 is because of the battery life. I've never gone all the way to 22 hours but it has certainly lasted as long as I've needed it to, even on the DK. I still enjoy the unit, but I'm getting a little disappointed in the lack of support for this fairly significant bug.

I also tried the Wahoo first -- it doesn't play well with Android and I found it to be slow and laggy. I returned it.
Another big positive for the Lezyne - satellite acquisition is super fast. I turn the unit on in my basement and it still manages to pick up signals within 30 seconds or less.

Thanks a lot! This is really good info. The LBS is really trying to steer me toward the Wahoo, but I'm an Android guy, so I don't want to have a hassle in that department. I have the DuoTrap Ant+ speed/cadence sensor, so hopefully that'll pair up with no problems.

To be fair my friend uses the Wahoo (with an iphone) and loves it. If you order directly from Wahoo they have a 30-day return policy, which helped.

i'm very interested in the lezyne super gps, i was wondering if the size is sufficient for my old eyes viewing the numbers? i was thinking of buying the package deal with cadence and hr monitor. any experience with these lezyne units?

I had it for a week or so. In the end it was just too clunky, hard to read, and hard to get tracks up to ridewithgps (basically, take it off the bike and plug it into a computer).

I keep going back to using my phone, now waterproof!

I had the same issue (distance jumps when paired with cadence and speed sensor) as cyclewaze....
Even after upgrading to the latest firmware released Dec 2016.
Unit is perfect If not for this particular issue.

I've just ordered one of these 'enhanced' GPS units from Lezyne and can't wait to try it out. The functionality seems perfect for my type of riding, as I plan in RWGPS and the turn by turn will be quite adequate for navigating. I do hope they develop the mapping feature but for $150 it's tough to see anything else filling this niche especially with the battery life and type of charging system. Garmins are just too wonky with file transfers and stuff - probably the higher end ones are easier but for the money I'm stoked to try this.

Anybody actually used the 'Enhanced Super GPS' to navigate some rides? Curious, as reviews are pretty limited on the interwebs.

I like mine a lot but I don't use all its functionality. Still it has been rock solid.

I got the enhanced Super GPS and speed/ cadence sensor for Christmas and really like it. I tried the navigation once and wasn't all that impressed with how long it took to reroute at times. Syncing with my iPhone and Strava was a breeze. The only experience I have with Garmin units is second hand and everyone I know complains about the mid-ride freeze, and connectivity issues. I have not experienced any of those issues.

Lezyne did just release a firmware update. I haven't noticed any changes, but it did reset my entire unit and I had to reset all my data pages, and settings so that was a bit of a pain.

Overall, I'd recommend the SuperGPS as an alternative to a Garmin.

I have recently purchased a Lezyne Super GPS (2015/16 model I believe) after my new Garmin Edge 25 battery died after just a few days. I would charge it up fully then 2 minutes into a ride it would tell me the battery is about to die, then get a message to say ride data saving, then it would turn off. This happened 3 times, luckily enough Amazon refunded without quibble, but it put me off Garmin and I hunted around for something similar, or even better, for the same money and came up the Lezyne. I'm now wondering if it is, and maybe some one can help.

So, does anyone know if the only way to upload the ride data to Lezyne / Strava is to open the app on the phone, turn on the Lezyne,connect both devices, navigate to the ride data, checkbox the ones which aren't already uploaded and then upload them? This seems fairly long winded when compared with the Garmin which auto uploads when you click the finished riding button on the Garmin without going into the app itself. You can simply leave the device on the bike and walk away, no messing. Secondly, it looks like there is no turn by tun or navigation of any sort on the Super GPS Lezyne (2015/16 model) The Garmin Edge 25, although very limited, does have this function. If this is the case with these two functions, apart from the battery life (which is great) compared to the Garmin, offers me little to keep the Lezyne as it feels like a 'step backwards', even though the Lezyne has a couple of other bits that dont actually interest me. (Altitude etc)

Have I overlooked these areas / options or am I correct can any one tell me ?

That's pretty much it. You can also connect it to your computer with the usb cable, but that's even more of a hassle.

True. The Year 10 (2017 model) version does have turn by turn, but the year 9 version, which you have, does not.

I've had the Year 9 Super GPS for about 1.5 years now and for the most part I'm satisfied. However, I'm a little annoyed that Lezyne has offered minimal support and updates to the Year 9 version, and instead have released the Year 10 version which has seemingly addressed some of the shortcomings of the previous version. It feels like those of us who took a chance on the Year 9 version were the guinea pigs for Lezyne, but received no real benefit for that.

Ah well that's the risk of being an early adopter. I'll probably buy a Wahoo Bolt if I need another computer any time soon.

I mean, it's not a bad device; it just could be better. The things it does, it does very well, so it's just a question of which features are dealbreakers for you.

Battery lasts forever and it reliably tracks my rides; I've never had it lose a ride like Garmins seem prone to. And I don't need turn-by-turn navigation. So it meets my needs, but everyone is different.

It is worth noting that the ELEMNT/BOLT has onboard GPS and does not use phone GPS. You can ride, see the map, and get route turn navigation without having a phone.

What you may be thinking of is the need to use a phone app to change to a route not already on the head unit. The ELEMNT/BOLT does not do routing on the unit, so if you decide to reroute or change destination while riding, you'll need a data connected phone to do it. Similarly, if you miss a turn or otherwise get off course, the unit will not reroute you and help you get back on course (other than showing you where you are on the map).

For now, hah. My 510 started off that way, but now that feature only works around 20% of the time. I normally have to go into the Garmin, into Rides -> Last Ride, click the hamburger, and hit upload. After a dozen or so "Upload failed" messages, it'll finally just magically work for no apparent reason.


Fortunately, I never use the mapping feature in bike computers. I basically just use it like an old fashioned bike computer, capturing ride data (and route) but other than staring at the pretty map on the Strava site after the ride, I pretty much ignore that stuff.

btw, I STILL haven't replaced my Garmin. I've mitigated the data loss by tapping save the INSTANT the ride is over, and for now that's kept the phantom ride problem at bay.

Oh my! I did not notice your OP was from last summer!

If your current unit is still meeting your needs, then that's that, but, if you are thinking about doing, both the Lezyne and Wahoo units have improved since then, and may be worth looking at again.

I realize you don't need the functionality, but as a BOLT user, I can tell you operating one is dead-simple, and a real joy to use (compared to Garmin E500 and 510).

Yeah, I figured those other units would get better and that it wouldn't hurt to wait til spring. Plus, money's been a little tight after buying the wife a new car AND having to pay deductibles on TWO deer hits with that car. :(

That sucks dude. Let me guess -- the deer were uninsured. Typical ruminants.

Hahaha...but yeah, that does suck! Living in SE Michigan, it's kind of surprising I've never aced a deer; around Ann Arbor, they're as common as squrrels almost.

Back in the early '00s, I was heading westbound to the Lake Michigan shore in the Manistee Nat'l Forest to do some camping, and I jumped on this ramrod straight piece of road coming off M37; it may have been Meade Rd out of Irons, I don't recall, but I'd been on it once before in my VW Westy, and new it was long, open, and unpopulated. This time, though, I was in my Audi 5k CSTQ which was hotted up with Intended Acceleration chip and a big K26 turbo. It was fast. And I went fast. So I'm flying down this gorgeous stretch of road at around dusk, doing like 140mph when I realized all the dark spots just off the road were not bushes but deer! A lot of 'em. I was able to brake down to a more appropriate speed without one dashing across the road, but I'll tell you what, that put fear into this dumb city kid.

Go figure, right?

One deer was in Feb and dashed out between our car and the one ahead of us. ZERO time to react. It hit the driver's side fender and rolled tumbling down the entire side of the car. $3600 in damage.

The second was in March. My wife was alone, saw the deer, and stopped. A 4x4 with a light bar coming the other way spooked them, and they dashed in all directions, including into her passenger side door and fender. $1500 in damage.

Fortunately our deductible is $250, but our insurance agent didn't hesitate to send us a very nastily-worded (and rather pointless) letter.


@chaadster: Sounds like a nice Audi. I just picked up a new GTI myself, using our TDI buyback money and the sale of my Mini Cooper to pay for. Can't beat having a 2 month old car with 1500 miles and no payment. :thumb:

Just spent 3+ hours trying to load tcx route file to thr Lezyne - couldn't get it to go. Loading turn by turn route to Lezyne root from Ride with gps. route shows on ROOT but map doesn't show. the word GO is supposed to appear to show ready to port to the phone app ALLEY, no good.

Had similar problems last year but thought is was just me.
