Learning to use the Garmin Edge 820 Workouts.
I have added a Garmin Edge 820 to my cockpit and now it is time to learn how to REALLY use it. I have been and will continue to play with customizing the screens to my liking. What I am not 100% sure about is the whole Workouts feature works exactly. I created the a Workout to fulfill this from my coach:
Start with a 10 minute warmup. Then settle into a nice STEADY LOW Tempo 120-130 bpm at 78+ rpm. During the ride, work in 4 X 10's at 150-155 bpm at 80+ rpm. Allow a MINIMUM of 20 minutes back at LOW Tempo 120-128 bpm between each effort. So I created this in Garmin Connect: http://www.miltonstreetphotography.c...p270711473.png

What do you mean export it? Like from the Connect website to your 820? That's absolutely possible.
I think the screen will change to a workout screen (and your field customization won't be visible, it's like a new data page) and you'll get stuff like a timer for the current step. When you set this up, you had the option to set a duration (10 minutes, etc) or to end that step with a press of the lap button. You opted for time, so you won't have to press lap. Personally, I don't use the workout feature. I can achieve everything with a data page that shows time in the current lap and other stuff like my HR or power. When I do hill repeats I hit lap at the bottom of the hill; for other types of workouts I might hit lap based on time or some other target. But in any case I just do it manually. |

Pro tip: Add a step between your warm up and the first interval to bike until lap button press. This will help you avoid an interval starting right at a stop sign, sharp turn, or anything else you'd prefer to avoid. You might add a similar step at the end of your workout so the Garmin doesn't stop recording while you still have several miles ride home. |
I'm thinking of getting an 820 specifically for the workout features.

Intersted in this. My old Polar circa 2006 used to alarm at the end of an interval, switch to a new zone and then beep when heart rate was out of that zone. This is what I am looking for. If the 820 does this then I will likely buy. -Tim- |

The 520 has this feature as well if you want to save some money. It may be possible with the 510 and 810 too, but I don't have a 810 and have never tried it on the 510. I can look tonight though.

I want to export it so I can send it to YOU:) Well, not actually you (unless you want it) but you get the idea, export to exchange with others.
https://connect.garmin.com/modern/workout/45817907 Do you get the "send to device" option? As far as I can tell there isn't a way for me to set this as public or private. Presumably it'll work the same way when you set up your workouts. If you can load this one, other people should be able to load the ones you make. |
