Help me shop for a Garmin/Wahoo etc...

Hello everyone,

I'm relatively new to the bike world and so far, I only commute to work (12 miles roundtrip), and will take my younger kids out on very leisurely rides from 3-6 miles. I REALLY enjoy commuting to work and I have a nice ride that's almost exclusively bike paths for the whole 6 miles.

I use mapmyride and I really like pushing myself to see how I compare to other people on my route. I was hauling today and my phone died after 5 miles and I lost all usable data. It's the 3rd time this happened in the last 2 weeks and I've had it. Phone was charged to 90%, I spent time deleting old photos/videos/apps so I'd have more space and it still died. Very frustrating to say the least.
  • Mileage Tracking. Daily/Weekly/Monthly. Plus, I love the charts on the website.
  • Mileage Splits. It's easy to see where I can increase my speed, or where I struggle.
  • Speed in relation to section of ride/elevation.
  • Top speed.
  • Courses. I think these are the equivalent of Strava's "segments". I enjoy competition and I really like the motivation to increase my time on the courses and see how I stack up.
  • Route Planning. Very easy and I enjoy looking for news routes to take, and find new courses/segments.

I think what I'm looking for, is some sort of bike computer that isn't dependent on my phone. I'd like to get something that is compatible with Strava/mapmyride and I can ride for longer without worry that my effort will be wasted because my phone dies.

Or there any options that fit my criteria? I don't plan on doing any major rides, but maybe get out and do 20-30 once a month. I've got 4 young kids so my time is pretty limited right now.

Thanks in advance!

You could just use an old phone without a data plan and just use it for mapmyride.

If you want more, I can't really knock the garmin, but I really like my wahoo bolt.

For somebody riding only occasionally, I can't recommend spending upwards of $150 or more on a dedicated cycling unit.

I would recommend getting either a new battery or a new phone and keep using MapMyRide

That said and having used a Garmin 810, I like my Wahoo Bolt much better, but they run $250 and need a functional smartphone to do the first setup.

EDIT: once the Bolt is initially setup you don't need a smartphone to be BT paired in order to get a saved ride uploaded to a server, it can use a home WiFi connection. Note that I don't believe Wahoo can sync with MapMyRide. I use RideWithGPS which I like better then MMR for my Bolt and for planning rides, etc... so if you are willing to switch to RWGPS, the Bolt can work well.

Garmin doesn't require a smartphone for setup, but is also more tome consuming to get configured. Garmin as well either pairs via BT to the Garmin app on a smartphone and can then send rides to the cloud (including MMR via Garmin Connect) or can use a USB connection to a PC for the upload. The 520 does not have WiFi.

Lezyne, Polar and Briton also make units.

I'd recommend the Wahoo Bolt ($250) or the Garmin Edge 520 (usually on sale for $250). You might be able to find the Edge 520 for less on eBay as well if you don't mind getting a used unit.

Both are good computers but I'd personally opt for the Bolt over the Garmin.

Lezyne Macro GPS. $100. Integrates with Strava etc.

By the way, deleting apps/pictures/etc does nothing to change your battery behavior. Turning off background activity etc will. Do you have the phone on the whole time? I stick mine in a back pocket; I've done 100mi rides without the battery going dead.

Thanks for the comments everyone. The Wahoo Bolt seems to be the long term answer so I think I'll just deal with the phone issue until I save up the cash.

Phone died after 14 minutes this morning. Lost all usable data. Frustrating to say the least.

For whatever it's worth, removing apps/data from your phone will do nothing to improve battery life. The two just aren't related.

The fact that your phone is crapping out so quickly suggests that the phone is old and the battery is on its last legs. I'd be surprised if you aren't having battery issues with it when you're not riding, and would suggest getting a small external battery and short cable, which will set you back $20 or so (and will be usable with your next phone). It's possible you're using an app that is making unreasonable demands on it, but without knowing more, I couldn't say. I can log an hour-long ride and run down my battery less than 10%—what you're seeing is not normal.

My phone is pretty old and occasionally my battery life will drop for no apparent reason, but running this app is really the only issue I have with it, so I don't want to drop a bunch of cash on something I don't use very often. And thanks for the FYI about the apps/data and how it relates to the battery, I wasn't sure if that stuff mattered or not so I figured I'd delete what I don't use. I did know about the apps running in the background so I always close those pretty often.

Seems like the best option (until I save some money) is to buy the external battery and small cable and work with what I've got.

Thanks again!
