List price is meaningless if that's not what it's being sold for. In this instance you can get an Edge 1000 for $375 and an Edge 1030 for $600 = a $225 difference.

I am not knocking anyone who wants it or buys it as I am sure it's going to be a fine computer but the price is absurd and the price for their proprietary battery extension is even more absurd.

Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself it's a good deal.. If you think it is then cool beans, by all means buy away. Not a snowballs chance in you know where I'd buy it over the Edge 1000 at the current price difference but to each their own.

I got it for less than $500 if that matters. I still would not have bought it if my out of pocket expense would have been the $600 retail pricing..

I purchased from biketiresdirect and had $109 in reward points. My total after the reward point usage was $491 with free 2-day shipping and no sales tax.

For $500 maybe it's worth it.. Time will tell

Picked up the Edge 1030 from FedEx this morning. Will do a 36 mile ride with it later and report back..

It's flippin ginormous!

I got it all setup then it updated to 3.20.. After the update all the settings and setup info that I had just done were wiped clean so I had to configure everything again. BOO!

1st ride today with the Edge 1030

I have Garmin magnetless speed and cadence sensors paired to it along with a Sony Z5 Compact Android phone and a scosche rhythm+ HR.

Initial impressions:
  1. It’s ginormous! Coming from the smaller computers (Edge 520, Edge 820, Wahoo Bolt) this thing is massive! I assume I will get use to the size over time but I feel like I have an iPad strapped to my bike! Towards the end of the ride it was starting to grow on me.
  2. The larger screen is nice to have especially with older eyes like mine. I still need to wear my contacts to read anything but the larger screen comes in handy for map viewing and reading SMS messages mainly.
  3. The backlight is dim, even at 100%. Not really an issue for me as I keep all my other computers set to zero. I cycle in the desert and the sun is always bright so I don’t really need backlight.
  4. Huge improvement in direct sun readability -v- the Edge 1000 and the Edge 820. Garmin and touchscreens have always meant somewhat cruddy contrast. The Edge 1030 is super crisp and clear outdoors! Dare I say close to the Wahoo screen contrast.
  5. The screen is responsive to touch and it is slightly improved over my Edge 820. I'd peg that the Edge 1030, when set to Medium sensitivity, is equal to the Edge 820 when it's set to High sensetivity. The Edge 1030 when set to High sensitivity is very responsive to input, touch and swipes.
  6. Not diggin the white color. Maybe it will grow on me and I do not like the silicone cases
  7. Need to get screen protector for it (dusty desert rides)
  8. Like the new SD card placement
  9. New out front mount is rock solid and the computer gets locked in firmly
  10. I dig the redesigned look of the home screen (similar to the 820) and I like the new widget options. Swipe down then left or right to see missed messages, weather, segments ect. I had hoped the 820 would get this but it has not yet.

I went on a 36 mile ride without using navigation. Tomorrow I’ll load a route and follow it to see how the Edge 1030 does. I’ll also go off course to see how it behaves. I also didn’t do any Segments today so I’ll test those as well going forward.

I didn’t have any sensor or BT phone disconnects during the ride. I received 12 text messages and they all displayed on the Edge 1030.

One cool thing to note, on Android, is that you can respond right from the Edge 1030 to SMS's. There are a few short responses available and you can't customize (add more or delete the ready made ones) but hopefully that option will come at some point. Responding to SMS is different from rider to rider messaging and it lets you respond to SMS from anyone that texts you on your phone.

When the Edge alerts to an SMS on the left side is an X to clear it and on the right side is a SMS bubble icon. Tapping on that icon brings you to the list of short messages to select from. Tap on the one you want and away it goes like magic! Pretty cool but I would not try and respond while moving. My responses were sent when stopped at a red light.

Here are a few screen grabs from my phone that I took after the ride showing how the responses look to the receiver.

I wondered how she knew it was coming from my Garmin but you can see that after my short response it says -Sent from my Garmin. I do not believe this feature is available on iOS..

I have screen sensitivity set to High and it worked well. It is slightly better than the Edge 820 and is more responsive to touch, input and swipes.. The screen while dim indoors, is crisp and clear when viewed in direct sunlight and the colors really pop on it.

Battery started at 100% and my ride was 2 hours and 41 minutes (2:16 moving time) and when the ride ended the battery was at 89%. Backlight was set to zero, 1 second recording, BT phone connected with GPS and Glonass on.

The ride uploaded fine to GC after it was ended and then auto sync'd over to Strava.

Overall it worked fine, battery life was stellar (if these #'s hold up), outdoor readability in direct sun is vastly improved, and the screen was very responsive.

A few photos:

Your narrative doesn't fit your narrative.

Your claim that $600 was "absurd" when $500 is reasonable is ridiculous.

Give it a rest will you? We went down this road already..

$600 is absurd and I would not have paid that for it. $500 might be reasonable which I said a few times in the thread. If you have nothing to contribute but garbage and trolling then please move on as others might find this thread useful and I assume are not interested in your childish games and remarks.

Raqball, thanks for the write up. I like the 1030 but I will most likely wait for the price to come down. Hopefully it will.

@raqball - thanks for the write-up. The 1030 looks lovely! Does it use standard Garmin quarter-turn mounts?

No problem.. I'll test out navigating a course and segments today. Yeah re: the price.. I bet they go down a little via holiday sales before Christmas. I got mine for $109 less using reward points or I would have been in the same wait for price drop boat as you.

You should follow your own advice.

Your "absurd price" crap wasn't useful (it's dumb).

That you bought one for a little less is hilarious.

Kewl!

If mine keeps working as it did yesterday then I'll probably end up keeping it. It was rock solid yesterday. One reminder for when you get it, and I mentioned it previously, do the firmware update before setting it up as the 3.20 update will wipe everything clear. Settings, sensors, profiles ect gone!

I reported your post as this is getting ridiculous.. Maybe the moderators can put a stop to it.

$109 off a $600 price is not a little less, it's a lot less! Do the math.. By my quick calculation off the top of my head that's 18% which is nothing to sneeze at.

Nothing you have posted in this thread has been helpful to anyone and calling people names (re: dumb ect) is uncalled for and childish.

Mods feel free to delete this post if you end up cleaning his up since I quoted him.

Does it come with the new 1030 Garmin Mount and also will it work with my 1000 mount..? I also noticed above you mentioned you got a discount on your new Garmin but is that really a discount since you used points you had to reduce the cost. You had to buy something in the first place to get the points right..? I just bought a 15,000 Hasselblad Camera from B&H and had received 385.00 in store points but i spent 15k to get it ..Oh well you have one and seem to like it..

@trekmogul,

You have to look at it like this. You were going to buy the Blad anyway. BH is still one of the best online photographic equipment retailers. So the $385 in credit was a bonus. Since now you have to spend that $385 or more to receive that value you really can't count it against the 15K Blad purchase. So if you buy your Garmin from BH that means $600 - 385 = $215.

But really was all this back and forth on what price someone pays really necessary.

Yes it comes with the new out front mount.. If you don't have the Garmin battery pack (that comes with a new adapter for the bottom of the 1030 mount) then the 1030 clips in exactly the same as other Garmin's. If you use the battery pack then I believe a lever is used to secure the Edge instead of the quarter turn..

When I purchase things I look at the bottom line = what come out of my bank. Yes I used reward points and I have those scattered everywhere. I had the $109 I used at biketiresdirect and I have $60 at Clever Training and more points elsewhere. I don't look at it as money spent because the points were free for buying other products from them. I would have bought the product anyways so to me, it's a win, win and free / bonus discount..

I posted early in thread that I thought the price was absurd, and I still do. That is my personal opinion. I also said that it was my opinion and that if others thought differently then that was cool too. The one person harped on this over and over and over again.

It had died down until I said I had purchased one at a discount. I had also previously stated that I thought it was worth $500 to me, which is about what I got it for. After posting I had ordered it he oddly felt the need to bring the pricing discussion back up and start up again with the name calling and childish put downs.

I honestly don't get BF sometimes. Users like that making coming here less than a positive experience..

Oh well, maybe we can get back on track now!

Racqball and njkayaker,

Enough with the bickering. This thread has lots of useful information for others. Please keep it on track. The alternatives are you both leaving the thread or it gets cancelled, which either is a shame for members wanting to hear more

Thanks!

Back on track!

Today I will load up a 42 mile route using the Strava Routes IQ app and will test TBT navigation. I'll deliberately go off course a few time to see how the 1030 behaves. The course has 2 Strava segments so I will test them out as well.

You kind of have to think of Garmins on their first software version (2.x) as beta. Boo for sure, but not terribly surprising. Still, thanks for pointing that out.

I'm probably not going to wind up with one but curious on two fronts:

  1. Is it bigger than the 1000? (Would it fit Enve's out front mount?)
  2. Is the lap button really on the edge of the thing? Looks like it would be a pain to hit while riding, any thoughts on that?

1. It's slightly larger than the Edge 1000 but the screen is noticeably larger than it.
2. Never heard of the Enve's mount so can't say. It would fit the Edge 1000 mount or even the Edge 520/820 mount that puts the computer above the bar. With the Edge 520/820 mount, it might look goofy though.
3. I think it depends on the bar. On my bike, I have plenty of room to hit the lap and start / stop buttons. I'll snap a photo later and try and show the clearance I have.

Today's ride was 42 miles using a Strava course and I completed 2 Strava segments. I loaded the course with the Strava Routes IQ app and it took about 1-2 minutes to fully load and ready to go.

I had the same sensors as yesterday (magnetless speed, cadence and rhythm+ HR) and phone connected. Edge set to 1 second recording, GPS and Glonass on and the backlight set to 0. The battery was at 89% when the ride started. Total time was 3 hours and 16 minutes (2:48 moving time) and the battery was at 72% after the ride so 17% used. Not bad at all.

I went off course twice and the Edge wanted to route me back to where I had left the course. I really wish Garmin could solve this and add an option to navigate to a new course entry point. The problem with routing back to where you left is if the road is closed you’d be right back where you started and still unable to continue. On the bright side, the large screen does make it easy to find your own back back on course at a different entry point.

I did not stay on the map page during the ride. When approaching a turn the map with TBT directions would popup and then after completing the turn, the map would go away and I’d be taken back to the data screen I was previously on.

I didn’t have any sensor or BT disconnects and I received 7 or 8 text messages. None were important or needed a short response so I read them and pedaled onward.

Segments were a bust! This is an out and back route and one of the segments is for South bound direction. When I was north bound the segment popped up and refused after a mile to clear. It should have known the direction I was traveling and the direction in which the segment runs. Also, it failed to clear even as I moved further away from it. Finally I manually exit it.

The next segment did not even give me a warning I was approaching it. Out of the blue it said GO!. During the segment I was not given time ahead or behind nor was I given distance to end. It was just a big map page with nothing but the road and 2 blue chevrons. A larger one for my PR and a smaller one for my current effort. When the segment ended I was given no update as to my time or anything else. The next segment, was the one I previously described that popped up in the wrong direction and would not clear, was later down the route and it loaded then immediately said ended. No map page like I previously described, nothing. At the end of the segment the name of it popped up again but I was not given any info or data.

Segments were a massive FAIL! Not sure if this was due to me riding a course or not so I will try a few segments tomorrow when not following a course.

Overall all the 1030 performed well again today and I have zero issues to report with the exception of the segments issue.. The ride uploaded instantly after I saved it and then sync’d over the Strava.

Just a quick update re: the Segments issue I previously described. Today was a 47 mile ride (no course or TBT) and I completed 5 segments. They all worked exactly as they should.

No issue at all on today's ride. Not sure what caused yesterday's segment problems but maybe it was route related.
