I use the Bontrager Flash 800 lumen light for my daytime running light. I run it in flash mode and I have no idea what the intensity of the flash is but it’s bright.
I was initially going to respond that it probably matters on whether you ride on MUPs or roads, but I have noticed that when I ride with a flashing light on a MUP, I have a lot less problem with people cycling towards me wandering into my side of the path. Do note that I have not yet ridden with my current light on a MUP but have other lights that I’ve used for daytime riding on paths that are not as bright as my Bontrager light. Most of my riding is on the road and most of the roads are 55mph rural-ish highways. There, almost daily, the bright flashing light changes behavior of drivers on cross streets. I can see that they see me and I can see a lot less attempts that could turn into dangerous left or right hooks. So for road riding, I’d have to same I’m an enthusiastic believer in high bright, sharp edged flashing lights on the front. |

I do know the the brighter than heck strobes they are putting on law enforcement and emergency vehicles lately make if very unsafe at twilight and night time while it is raining. At least to me it does.[/QUOTE] I rode past several police vehicle Tuesday night at twilight on my ride home. They were all parked in the no parking section of the street which required me to merge with traffic to get past them. There was no way my lights would be able to compete with theirs and I felt more vulnerable while riding past them, I'm glad I don't have to do that on a regular basis. |
Hello,
I hope you don't mind me chipping in with this. I can remember a while ago coming up behind a bicycle in my car at night. I was away from bikes and LED lights were a new thing to me. I passed by a rider with a flashing red tail lamp and it was blinding. I love bikes and I share the road, but getting flashed in the eyes is not a good thing and you do not want to know what I thought of this person with that lamp. No, it was not safe that I had to blink and avert my eyes. Yes, it was that bright. Just note that when you program/aim your lights. Food for thought. |
I use the brightest front strobe with the most obnoxious strobe effect possible. it's not for looks, it's not for others approval. it's to prevent this
