Drew Eckhardt, I looked at those dynamo chargers, and they look like a niche product. And they work best with a cache battery. An Anker Astro E1 is all I need, all day. I keep the screen on the whole day.

Otherwise, I'm jealous.

Hey, thanks much for the tip. Always helpful to hear from locals about ways to avoid traffic. I am beginning to plan a route using (oh no) a PAPER atlas (Benchmark), so will use the trail mentioned. The main tour targets are Mt. Rainier and the ocean. I agree and reflect on your "jealous" note....you are fortunate to be close to such beautiful areas!

Basically it comes down to how much you'd like to spend for comfort and convenience. Navigation on phone works alright, but it'd be a hassle to use (fingers, screen, security/water resistance) and it'd be a bigger hassle to keep it charged in a long ride. Bright, colorful and hi-res phone screens drain the most battery, then cellular (if reception is low it'll drain more than usual) and then GPS. A head unit only has GPS and an adequate non-drainy screen with better visibility/interaction. (considering your ANT+/bluetooth usage is similar in both products)
