GoPro (action cam) mount that is easy to remove while riding
 

I'm not sure I can explain this in the title ...

I would like to have a way to mount my GoPro Session to the handlebars, but remove it during a ride to get selfie footage, or turn the camera to another rider, or other stuff not straight in front of the bike. Then replace the camera back in the handlebar mount to keep secure and take handlebar video. The Session is small enough it's not easy to handle alone, so I'd need a 'handle' on the camera. Does that make sense?

For reference, you can see my current Session handlebar mount, it works well, but it's limited. Additionally, you can see why I'm looking for a way to grip the camera, a small action camera in these conditions is not manageable.

I have the floaty grip - like this one - it'd be great to have a way to mount this with a quick release.

Is this just too esoteric?

not at all, my Polaroid has a quick release & does just what you want. can't say you could adapt it but I find it hard to believe that such a popular brand as gopro doesn't already have a quick release available. since I'm not familiar with the brand & all accessories I can't help with the handle

but last time I was out riding I used velcro on my helmet & I liked it!

Thanks! and thanks for sharing that mount, that is what I'm looking for. Now to find one that works with my camera ... or go get a Polaroid.

Another option is to get a second GoPro and mount for alt angles. You can pick up a used one at KEH for a very reasonable price.

I was planning on a new/second GoPro for 2019* - I think N+1 is going to be the solution to my challenge. The new Hero 7 has some amazing features that I'd love to use.

For long rides, I'd likely mount the Hero 7 on the bars and keep the old Sessions on the handle mount for alternate shots. I can keep the Session in a jersey pocket or on a CamelBak shoulder strap pocket.

* we downsized our house in 2018 to free up $$ and time for more fun stuff - like silly electronic toys and bikes and races and trips and ... that's the fun stuff.

The dune buggie design is the closed to what I'd like, but I'm concerned about the scale of that set up on handlebars.

For reference, I was inspired by GNC presenter Katherine's ride of DK200 and her selfie dialog on the ride. She let me know that she simply kept a GoPro in her jersey pocket for these clips. But she had a full, well equipped camera crew with her too.

I think the second camera is a more affordable option than a professional camera crew ;)

just got my 2nd camera & I'm trying to figure out what to do with it. last ride I was velcro-ing my cam on & off my helmet to do some hand held stuff & it was kinda hard to get it back on exactly straight w/o some fussing. thinking now, w the 2nd cam I can just leave 1 on my helmet & 1 in my pocket. if the threaded hole in the 2nd cam is good, I might go back to the quick release

Doing more research on this subject, I found this nice video (he had 4 cameras!). Not so much about mounting the cameras, but how he managed/used his cameras on ride.


One take away, I'm not that confident with one hand, so I should focus on my bike handling skills while thinking about my hand-held camera footage.

:thumb: I had a fall while one-handing a camera / bike cuz I hit some mud that sucked my front wheel. I doubt that would have happened if I was 100% concentrating on cycling

Thank you to all the everyone for feedback and thoughts. I created a kinda MacGyver solution using mounting parts I had laying around. The result is mostly successful, allowing me to get some selfie footage as well as typical forward looking video and some clips looking along the road.

There are two thumb screws, one you see on the top right and one hidden under the Garmin. With the thumb screws, I can spin the mount at the bar-mount, and tilt the camera at the top.

wow, you have good teeth! :D but seriously, that looks so tall I would think that woul add more vibration &/or be prone to rotate/fall over. the video doesn't have excessive vibration! well done!

Thanks! And this is an old Session without any stabilization software. I'm sure with a modern camera with stabilization baked in, it'd be better.

just came across this older thread. I eventually got a GoPro and glued the Polaroid mount on the bottom so now I can use all my old mounts, & it's quick release as well!
