Wahoo Magnetless Sensors - Very Poor Readings

I had a Wahoo Blue SC for about four years and it wore out - very happy with the product. The LBS convinced me to get the new magnetless sensors. I keep getting erratic data readings. Last night my max speed on the trainer was 390 MPH. The cadence reading dances all over the place. So now, three months later, the LBS is out of business.

Is anyone else having such bad luck with the "RPM" Cadence and Speed sensors?

And yes, I have replaced all the batteries and checked the firmware.

I also went from the BlueSC to the RPM speed and cadence sensors. Have had them for just over a year now and haven't had the issue you are having. Every once in a great while, I may get a speed spike from the sensor but it usually spikes to the 30-60 mph range. It happens so infrequent that I personally don't worry about it. Not had that issue with cadence sensor yet. Have you contacted Wahoo support? They are really good about helping and very good about replacing defective products in a very timely manor.

I too have had no issues with Wahoo's cadence and speed sensors. I've got one or both on 5 bikes in the family.

Try deleting all other sensors in the set up, including the new ones, and then re-pairing them.

I have both the speed and cadence sensors and have not had the issue you are experiencing.

I assume you have a dumb trainer and the only speed reading is coming from the Wahoo sensor, and not mixed signals from a smart trainer? Since you are using this indoors, the Wahoo unit cannot use GPS to self calibrate. You need to make sure you go into the Wahoo app and make sure you have the correct tire size selected, and see if that helps.

Edit: I see you are having issues with cadence as well. What app are you using that makes you see all these anomalies?

OP here,

I am using the Wahoo app. I get bad data about half the time. Mostly a huge spike in speed for 1 minute to 5 minutes. Throws off my mileage. I entered data on the Wahoo app for my tire size. I will try the forget and relearn thing.

I wonder if the bike store sold me returned stock since they were liquidating the store. I wrote to Wahoo today...we will see.

Something else you might try, especially if you are going to un-pair and re-pair the sensors, is to make sure that they are both connected to your computer using the same band. Since they transmit in Ant+ and BTLE simultaneously, you may want to make sure that they are both paired either in Ant+ or BTLE. Since I use my phone for Live Tracking, my sensors are connected to my Bolt via Ant+ leaving the BTLE connections for the app on my phone. Not saying this will cure the problem but worth a try.

yeah the cadence sensor was glitchy for me when I first bought it. Wahoo support had me flash newer firmware which just does longer averaging I think to smooth out the data. The speed unit is fairly consistent although I should check if the speed reading on my wahoo elemnt is from GPS or the sensor.

The Wahoo Cadence and Speed sensors work well for me... It's the Tickr HR monitor that gives me trouble.

For what it is worth, I put the speed sensor on the front wheel so that it would be closer to the Bolt, and the signal would be stronger. But I haven't had any of the issues you are describing.

Two thoughts come to mind - one perhaps the batteries in the sensors are getting weak. I don't know what the failure modes look like, since I am still on the original batteries, but worth checking.

Secondly, check to see whether there are firmware updates for the magnetless sensor. The Wahoo Utility app can be used to check for and install the updates to the sensors. I believe this app will show signal strength for each sensor, which might give you a feel for what the battery condition is.

I had to send back two magnetless sensors. I ended up getting a Garmin model that works well.

Cell app, Android or IOS? Maybe try using a different phone and/or OS. My wahoo speed & cadence via blueTooth on my Android was working great until a software upgrade to my cell made the connection glitchy. Worked perfectly fine with my wifes apple phone and it worked fine using my sons android (different cell mfgr than mine). Bought a Bolt and havent looked back.

common problem in almost all sensors is the quality of the batteries. I’ve had lots of problems until I just toss the included battery and use a fresh new one. Since CR2032’s have a very long shelf life, it’s that they are buying lousy batteries to begin with.

Ive seen the issue on speed, cadence sensors and on power meters.

I would just say that some devices connect better than others to the sensors. Some software too. I can connect every time to my Zwift app on my iMac using bluetooth for the trainer and ant+ for the HR and cadence. But if I try different combinations it doesn't work consistently. On the Sufferfest app it is a different combo that works well. On my Bolt though I never have any problems and I don't even know how I have the sensors paired. I also have both a Garmin and Wahoo HR strap, and they both have the same problems with pairing.
