Camera suggestions?
 

I'm looking for a camera to document rides with. Not necessarily one that will record accidents. Looking for something with better video quality. I know a lot of people use a GoPro. Is that the best option out there? I have an iPhone XS Max and it takes decent video but there isn't any image stabilization or anything. So looking for camera suggestions (or other ways to get better video) and also looking for suggestions for mounting it to a drop bar bike.

I believe that your iphone does in fact have image stabilization, although it may not be aggressive enough to be useful with bike videos. You can also stabilize video after the fact in iMovie etc.

Whatevever you use to shoot, you'll probably wind up using a Gopro mount, just because they're so ubiquitous. There are numerous options, including a bunch that have a computer mount on top and a gopro mount on the bottom. K Edge sells some, and there are a bunch of no-name vendors on Amazon with the same general idea. And if you haven't seen this thread already, there are custom 3D printed designs you can get.

I've been noodling over this problem myself and have thought about putting something together using a Gorillapod.

I personally like the Gopro myself for recording. I read reviews comparing it and the Osmo Action and ended up getting the Hero7 due to its stabilization which is very good. I have it mounted to the end of my stem as shown:

I have a Hero session 5. (purchased a few years ago). Tiny cube. Press the button for a second to start capturing, press again to stop. Excellent image quality, waterproof, tons of accessories (many variants of handlebar/helmet mounts). Short battery life (but is probably true of alternatives as well).

You may also want to consider Garmin's VIRB. One nice feature is remote control via ANT+. You could mount your camera on your front hub and activate capture with your GPS.

Tons of alternatives. Really depends on what you want to do (cost/features/quality)

What mount are you using for that?

It's a DYMOECE out front mount. You can find it (and several copies) on amazon. I would get the one with the adjustable angle.

They all suggest the latest GoPro, Sony and Garmin models. Sony is the only one with optical image stabilization and GoPro the most addons for the camera and the Garmin integrates very well with your GPS, ANT+ and other devices.
Other good suggestions are DJI (known for their handheld gimbals), Insta360 (cool niche features).

GoPro cameras do not even begin to have enough battery life to record our average 40 mile rides. i'm using a Cycliq on the rear, but it's pretty unstable.
