Anyone else having problems updating maps on a garmin?
both my 1030+ and explore have had issues updating maps. I think its the connect software. it will get some error about 1/2 way through downloading map updates. both on my Mac and windows.

Took some 3 hours to download the map, by which time the OS had timed out and unmounted my 1030. The next morning I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it apparently installed correctly.
However, after my next ride, something strange happened during sync. On the subsequent ride, I didn't have any HR readings (other sensors were fine). When I got home the unit uploaded the ride over WiFi, and by the time I'd pulled out an old unit to check the HRM, it registered heart rate again. Seems to have worked since then without problems. Could be calculating a checksum, in my instance, or some other silent check during sync. Might it be an ISP problem (dynamic host control protocol changing IP address mid-stream?) or map file too big for your computers? |
Are you updating through the wifi update feature on the device or using Garmin Express on a PC? For a long time, when I update my Garmin devices, I always make certain I use Garmin Express and connect my computer to the internet with an Ethernet cable, not wifi. I think it was simply the wifi congestion in my area from neighbors and my very old wifi appliance.
When ever I used wifi, I'd get half way or a little more and it'd stop, then fail several hours later. When I used an Ethernet connection, the update would be over and done in less than 20 minutes, 30 minutes at the outside. I recently updated my wifi in the house but haven't checked whether the Garmin devices that have their own update feature can successfully update now or that I can successfully update using Garmin Express with a wifi connection to my computer. Other issues to Garmin servers for update can even be your time and time zone being off on your computers. I had that actually happen once, but in that case I immediately got a message oddly and wrongly stating the Garmin servers were down. But they weren't. |
A generic comment not specific to Garmins, I and a lot of my friends have had internet glitches since Covid started. We are assuming that all the extra people using internet for work (Zoom meetings) at home or for virtual schooling has over-stressed the internet.
I have an automotive GPS from Garmin, I had a glitchy map update on that several months ago, but I now assume that any big download will be glitchy. Several times a day I lose internet connection from my local internet provider getting overwhelmed. |
I have cable and have a wired connection. it goes for a hour and a half then dies. about half way through. at work my connection is slow and it just took longer then stopped. I wish you could download the files then connect. maybe it is timing out the garmin connection. I don't know for sure but I( have tried it several times with no luck. I have updated them before and I am wondering if it is a new software glitch with the connect app. don't need the new maps but just wondering.

Mine took forever to update the maps via Garmin Express app and then after it did, wouldn't boot. I've had the same problem before. I had to keep powering it down and restarting but eventually it booted and it's fine. My wife's 830 updated wirelessly and flawlessly.

Have you gone through the Troubleshooting stuff for Garmin Express on Garmin's Support site?
https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?fa...nerrormessages https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?pr...nerrormessages https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?pr...768&tab=topics Seldom have they helped me for those type issues. But they must have helped someone. Also, call Garmin Support on the phone. You don't have to sit and wait in queue burning up your phone minutes. If the wait time is long, then their system will offer to take your call back number and when your turn in queue will have come up, then they'll call you back. But it'll probably be much of the same stuff, and if you aren't technically knowledgeable about your equipment that connects you to the internet, then that'll be a minus too. January 1 was the last time I updated maps and other updates on several Garmin devices I have. No issues then and it was all fairly quick (in Garmin terms of quick) using a macbook and Garmin Express with wired Ethernet connection. |
with garmin buying that geos satellite center, i can imagine the same crud happening when you need a rescue..lol
