Garmin Edge on 22.2mm MTB bars?
 

How many years has the Garmin Edge series been around, and there's still not a good way to mount them on 22.2mm handlebars???

I've found 22.2mm mounts for TT bars, but they're sideways when mounted on MTB bars. Even dumber, none of those mounts can be rotated 90°, so they ONLY work on TT bars.

So, what's a good way to mount an Edge on a 22.2mm MTB bar? Or is this another reason to look for other brands of handlebar GPS?

K-edge makes a less awful-looking version, as well as options for a stem-cap mount or a spacer mount that hovers over the stem.

The official out-front mount, and the copies, all require a lot of shim to fit on skinnier bars. This results in a lot of wiggle, and it's ugly as sin.

Do your bars attach to the stem such that this would suffice?

The stem mount ones won't work on a stem that has two bolts, vertically. The other things I don't like about those stem-mounts is that in a crash (or vandalism on a parked bike), if those extra-long bolts (holding what's effectively an even longer lever) are bent or broken, that's a problem until I get to a shop or some bench-tools.

The other ones… (1) I don't trust rubber-bands to hold expensive things to a bike, (2) won't work on "crowded" handlebars, and (3) the GPS can't sit above the bars for better visibility, and it can't sit below the bars for protection in a crash.

What I want is basically just an out-front style mount, but made for 22.2mm bars. No one makes such a thing??

The cycling world has moved on to 31.8 bars. Get used to it and use a frigging shim.

The thick shim that came with my Edge 820 wasn't thick enough for my bars. After a bit fof experimentation, I found that 2 (or1? 3?) layers of cotton tape under the thick shim was enough to provide good enough foundation for road riding.

Even if that was true (it's not) why haven't there been any smaller out-front style mounts for 10+ years?

I've never had an issue with the bands. Although all my bikes are road bikes. Nevertheless, the lanyard should hold the expensive thing to the bike.

A quick look at an online vendor shows that the vast majority of mt. bike bars are 31.8. Same with road. Some are 35 which is silly, there are a few 25.4, but most are 31.8. Seems the mount manufacturers needed to find a standard and settled on 31.8 as its easy enough to shim to a narrower bar, many provide the shims as well. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with putting a shim under the mount, its often needed for lights as well, not getting why this is an issue for you.

Some possibilities:

• Use a shim
• Put the computer on the stem instead
• Get a mount that uses the stem bolts
• Use a GPS watch
• Get new handlebars
• Stop tracking and ride hippie style
• Run instead

I make shims with self-fusing silicone tape. They're quite durable.

I just came across this issue as well. Trying to mount it to my 22.2mm bull moose bar. Hard to believe a ubiquitous device like this has not figured out what cyclist really need. The worse part is mine secures with a tiny little 2.5mm socket screw that is just begging to fly into the road. And it's black even. I think this mount was $43! Are you kidding me?

I found a shim from a $10 headlight that works with the help of a little rubber shim. Shameful that nothing included with the Garmin mount could make this work.

I never liked it on my bars, so I have always mounted mine on my stem. Of course, if you have a classic quill stem, it's not going to be easy to mount there either.
