Connecting Ultegra Di 2 to Garmin 1030+

Prior to each ride, I need to put my Di2 into Bluetooth mode and then manually connect my 1030+ to it. I suspect that the Di2 should automatically connect to the 1030+ just as all the other sensors (heart rate monitor, cadence, Varia radar, lights, etc) do.

While it is not difficult to do and has become part of my normal routine before starting a ride, I would prefer that the connection be automatic. Advice on how to make this happen will be appreciated. Thanks!

It should automatically connect once you 'wake up' the drivetrain with the first 'wake up' shifter click. It sometimes takes a minute for everything to recognize and communicate.
I use a 840 and Di2 105 and it connects when I wake up the Di2 system.

I hit one of the "hidden" buttons to wake up my Di2 without actually shifting. This gives my Garmin the heads up that Di2 is active. Note that my hidden buttons control the screen on my 530.

Why aren't you doing a Ant+ pairing? I have my Di2 paired to my Edge 530 via Ant+ and it's seldom any issue. Although if I don't let the Di2 be found before I start my timer, then I sometimes have to stop the activity and let it be found.

How do you get the pairing to be done via Ant+ instead of Bluetooth? When I want to pair the devices, I press the button on my Di2 controller and the two LED indicators blink repeatedly to show that the Di2 is in pairing mode. I then connect it to my 1030+ by hitting Connect on the Garmin. Not sure if the connection is via Ant+ or Bluetooth.

Since you said originally that it was paired with BlueTooth, I assumed you knew.

I believe that Garmin Edge device will pair it by Ant+ if the device is putting out a Ant+ signal.

Are you ensuring that the Di2 is woke up and the 1030 connected to it before you start the timer? I usually just push the hidden buttons under the hoods of my Di2, but if you don't have those buttons, then work the shift lever. Though I think just moving the lever to attempt a shift to the ring the FD is is already in will wake it up. That way you don't have the wear and tear of shifting while not pedaling.

The only time I have issues with the Di2 connecting is when the timer of my Edge 530 is already running. So as I'm taking the bike out of the house, I've gotten into the habit of pushing the buttons under the tops of the hoods after first waking up the Edge 530.

I do have the hidden buttons under the hoods. I will trying using them to wake up the Di2 and hopefully it will auto-connrct. Thanks to you, and the others, for your your advice and suggestions.

I rode yesterday and after the first time I changed gears, my Di2 woke up and automatically connected to my Edge 1030+, just as many of you said it would. Thanks to all that posted comments. I now no longer have to manually connect my Di2 and Edge 1030+ before each ride.

A cool feature now that things are functioning ; If you are changing screens on the Edge during your ride, you can use the Di2 hidden buttons to do so. I use the buttons to flip between my standard data screen and the map screen.

I am aware of using the hidden buttons to change screens on my Edge 1030+. I use that feature quite often during rides. Others may not be aware of it, however, so thanks for bringing it up
