Major (to me) negative of the Explore 2
 

I have suddenly started getting Pothole and Animal Hazard Alerts every 15-20 minutes on my rides. I have yet to see any of the forecast potholes or animals. What type of animal I should be concerned about in the city is also baffling. I'm in Toronto proper; raccoons, squirrels and occasionally a rare coyote are hardly something that requires a hazard warning.

On the Explore 2, you CANNOT turn off Hazard Alerts unless you change to Nav Prompts>Text Only. This means that you lose mini map pop-up at each turn and auto zoom into intersections which only work under Nav Prompts>Map option.

Sucks because all of a sudden the Hazard Alerts are getting ridiculous.

The constant Animal hazard is annoying and somewhat bizarre.

btw, I suspect that you are just wrong about this. On my Edge unit, I can turn off each particular type of alert that I wish, with no changes in other features. And even if I don't bother doing that, the alerts disappear in a moment or can be eliminated just by touching my fingertip to the X in the corner -- not really necessary since the alert is tiny and doesn't obscure much of the screen.

Yes I can X them when they pop up but they have become constant, frequently one appears after X’ing one out. And the constant Animal alerts make no sense.

Possible the update that screwed up my compass as this is a recent thing.

The update history for your device shows NO changes to the alerts, which reinforces my belief that you haven't read the manual, since it is very easy to turn off individual alerts (or all of them).

But again, even if you can't figure out how to turn off alerts, you'll never convince me that a tiny little popup at the bottom of your screen is a big deal.

I have turned off all the alerts manually. Each one is slid to off. The only ones I still get constantly are Animal and Pothole. There is no option for Animal. And yes “Road” is off.

I don’t get them when Nav Prompts>Text is selected but then no mini maps etc.

I had to wipe and reinstall the maps and that fixed compass. Will try firmware manually later.

Are animal and pothole alerts triggered because someone else marked them? I don't know how else they could be triggered. So this may be a side effect of being connected to your phone.

I had to turn off some of the communications on my 830. Imagine getting alerts of nearby garmin users when you are on a ride with 6000 other people. I got multi-page alerts of people's names. There have been rare occasions when I passed by someone who knew my name and I didn't recognize, but I'll live with the embarrassment of not knowing who they were.

I was wondering the same; from Garmin's database of crowdsourced data. Apparently, they rarely delete hazards, so if someone reported a coyote or pothole a year ago in a certain location, its still a hazard.

It this is through a waze app, then those are developed independent of Garmin. So it's probably the entity that made the waze app that the wagging finger should be pointed at.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Waze app. I believe the hazards are crowdsourced from Garmin. The Alerts were useful before the update on Garmin Express. Now, they're just ridiculous Animal alerts that make no sense and potholes that don't exist.

Perhaps a call to Garmin Support might get you some answers about it. Or we can just keep supposing.

The theory is that waze is making a notification on his phone and that gets sent to the garmin? I turned off phone notifications on my garmin pretty early on because CVS likes to send random notifications early Sunday morning.

CVS.... That's another monster that doesn't understand why we make fun of the 5 foot long resister receipts for 1 item purchased. Or why asking for a text message when my prescription is ready doesn't mean I want texts from them about everything else.

Reply back to them with STOP. And they'll all go away. At least for a while.

To disable road hazard alerts on a Garmin Edge Explore 2, navigate to Settings > Activity Profiles > select a profile > Alerts and Prompts > Road Hazard Alerts and turn it off.

Interesting that folks come to a forum to complain about a feature that they could have easily disabled simply by reading the manual.

Sounds like he's following the manual.

Perhaps his children could have created him a route and just put all those annoyances in it's cue sheet! <grin>

So that would be a different setting to turn off.

I think this is yet another case of a dead short between the keyboard and the chair. Perhaps there will be a follow up if it gets solved, but that rarely happens.

On my Garmin Edge unit, the alerts are easily disabled as per the instructions, with no other impacts on navigation.

Yeah, mine too, I have a 1040 and 1050 and on both I don’t get any hazard or warnings of any type as I shut all that off. Thing is, the Explore and Explore 2 are oddball Garmin units with many differences in the OS, so what we assume works might not on that unit.

I know a randonneur that had the original explore and it had enough shortcomings that I would never consider one. Didn't know I had so much in common with stravaholes.
