Car headlight on a bike?
 

What I would like to do is put a car HID kit on my bike. I would like to know:

• what kind of car headlight is the best for putting an HID kit in?
• how much power will I be needing?

the best is to buy an OFF ROAD HID lamp with the ballast pack inside the lamp assembly. That way all you need to do is mount a battery , connec t the leads and switch. Brands like KC HILiTES, LIGHTFORCE, PIAA etc. Often you can buy a single lamp, for aorun $100 and up. They throw a light beam about 1 mile long if oyu get a spotlamp or about half a mile if you get a flood.

Be sure to look for a HID rated for 30W or less, otherwise you'll drain your battery way too fast. Even then, you'll need a pretty beefy battery to supply that much power for a useful amount of time.

Check out the HID lights at www.batteryspace.com; you may find that their kits are very comparable in price to car HIDs once you factor in the batteries and all the other stuff.

Are you going to carry a car battery too? Forget the 80W car HID idea. It's totally overkill. The 10W bicycle HID are bordering on too bright as it is. If you want to DIY one, look at the Trail Tech kits directly from Trail Tech and build your own battery. It would be advised to do a search on Battery Space in the forums before doing business with them.

i carry a 12v SLA 10AH and it works just fine, not heavy at all. 100watt PIAA H3 bulb and a 8" reflector and housing all the way. It lights up everything, and is perfect for bombing logging roads at night, i can see clearly 1km ahead.

I bought a 13w HID from batteryspace (no problems with the transaction or product, fyi) and
it is more than bright enough, approximately 30% brighter than the 10W HID they sell.

The brightest, of course, is the 30W HID which is 1850 lumen, overkill IMHO. The 10W
is 550 lumen, I'm guessing the 13W is in the 650-700 range. Plenty bright. Cars see me
coming and they can't ignore me.
