gps with this feature
Im loooking into picking up a gps with a feature that can map my route (on and offroad) as I ride. does something like this even exist?

Does "map my route" mean you want the GPS to show you a detailed real-time map of your route? Or do you want the GPS to record where you have been so you can display a map later on your home computer? The Garmin Edge 705 and some Garmin Etrex models do both. Earlier Garmin Edge models do only the latter.

I dont know, Im thinking I kind of want a map-in-hand kind of thing with a display. I like to get lost out in the sticks when I ride, but not too lost incase I cant find my way back of course.

Most handheld GPS's will do this. I currently use a Garmin GPSMap60csx for this. The Edge 705 will do the same and also act as a bike computer. Be aware that you will also have to buy compatible mapping software to get more detailed maps of the areas you will be riding in.

The Colorado series and the GPSmap76 series. Actually about any GPS with mapping feature.

I use the Garmin Vista HCX.. Buy the Topo Maps CD and you will have all off-road trails in addition to all streets in the US.. I bought mine specifically for the off road trails in my area. It does not have the detail as far points of interest or restaurants that the city navigator cd has but I personally find it more useful..
I use mine for road and mountain biking.. Buy an additional 1gb or 2gb micro sd card and load lots all the maps you need.. The 2gb, you can almost load the entire us maps.. Pick and choose areas or entire states if you like.. The battery is excellent even when you keep the backlighting on.. You can upload your rides just like the cycling specific garmins to motionbased.. You just do not have a HR or cadence option..

I use just a basic yellow garmin etrex. It does ok in the woods but the newer version has a high sensitivity receiver that will do MUCH better.
It will show you a trail of where you've been on a map screen as well as any way points you've set. It doesn't have a map as you would think of it with roads and all labeled but it will show you where you've been. The way I use it in the woods is I'll set a waypoint at my car so if I ever get lost I can just navigate back to the car. If all else fails, you can also track back your trail on the gps and go back the exact way you came. I think these are around $100 these days.
