Nightrider conversion to LEDs?
 

I've got 2 nightrider systems with the water bottle batteries. One is a really old 20/12/both dual bulb. This is the old design with the switch on the light, before they went to the button system. The other is a single, I believe it is a 10w (Cyclops).

BTW, just as a testimony to the quality, both are over 10yrs old and on the 20 setting my 2 light system still gets over 90min of run time before it dims.

Has anyone come up with a conversion to LED for these? I'm pretty sure these were halogen bulbs (the 20 gets to hot to hold. I'd think that with LED technology there should be a way to convert them and get days of light instead of hours.

Do your lights use a standard size bulb ?

If they do you might be able to fit a replacement LED bulb ?

One problem with fitting high power LEDs into existing lights is heat management.

With halogens a lot of the heat escapes from the front and the halogen doesn't mind getting hot.

With LEDs you have to find some way of getting the heat out as they won't stand overheating.

How about a few pics of the lights ?

It'll be interesting to see what turns up. I have a NiteRider Trail Rat 10W that works fine for now, but I hate the 9-hour charge time for 2:20 hours of burn time, and even then it's half as bright as my P7. If it ever dies I'm going to see what I can do to stick an LED in there.

It's a 6V battery. Depending on what driver you use, you could get lots of usable light and nice long run times out of it, or you could wire it up to some 18650 cells. I really like the sturdiness of the light's housing, mounting, switch, and cable connections.

Will the housing conduct heat away from a LED though ?
