Mirrors with Blinkers

I found this online today:

http://www.50cycles.com/winkku-safety-mirror.shtml

It seems like something that would add a lot of safety to a bike ride. Has anyone got experience with these mirrors?

I would rather buy these at the LBS, I prefer not to buy online.

Doesn't seem like it would add anything except visibility. Motorists don't expect bicycles to carry turn signals of any kind except their arms.

Maybe not, but I also remember a time when motorcycles did not have turn signals either.

I like the idea, however it would cost over a hundred dollars to get them shipped to the states. I am not willing to pay that.

I think they are a great Idea, I drove a semi truck for years & I can tell you as a professional driver that information you can give to others on the road is vital

I doubt this will be much better than other bicycle turn signal products. And without any video clips on that site of it being used, who knows? At least they could put up some pictures using the correct rear light color, or even go crazy and use full color.

Even if you were willing, I don't see any sign of a left side model to order for U.S./non-U.K. use.

It did state that red showed to the rear and white to the front. It is possible that it shows amber when using the turn signal function.

It appears (by picture) that the mirror/light rotates right were it mounts to the end of your bars. That would make the turn lights on the top when used on the left side, the controls would still be in the correct position.

I emailed the company asking for clarification on this, I will post back once I hear from them.

Just received this reply:

Hi

Yes we can offer a left side version and I will get our guys to put delivery information for the USA on there soon.

Good idea about the Video I will try and get something on You tube shortly.

Best regards

Scott

I did not ask about the red lights to the rear in my first email. I sent another email asking if it was red to the rear and then flashed amber for the signal.

I also asked for more clarification on the left light; if it was the same one that just rotated or if it is left specific.

Thanks for that clarification. I think they mean an honest left-hand version, not just flipped upside down. (It's really important, when a box is in shipment, that one must follow the instructions that say "This Side Up"-lol)

The ad says red, but the pictures show amber, I would like some clarification on that.

I am still waiting for a reply on that; being Saturday maybe I just caught someone in the office the first time.

What I posted in the other thread:
http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?p=8399500

Turn signals work best when there's somebody nearby -- normally to your rear flank -- and is there long enough for you to look, signal, then start to make your move.

But, cars aren't nearby for more than a couple seconds. They're either passing you or you're passing them.

And, if you're moving across a lane or three, and you're going significantly slower than approaching traffic, you're running a real danger of getting smushed no matter how well you're illuminated.

The safest time to change lanes, then, is when there's nobody close enough to matter. It would be virtually impossible for you to get hit, even by a totally clueless driver.

Since there's nobody close enough that they need to see your turn signal, that means that turn signals won't be of any use.

IMO -- save your money, and ride smarter.

Red *running* lights for night.
Amber *flashing* turn signals for day and night.
