I ordered a Garmin Edge 705 today...
I hope I will not be beset by buyers remorse...
I ordered the 705 with the cadence option. I have not decided on: 1) SD or DVD for Maps 2) Topo maps or City Maps. I am mainly a mac user but have XP running in a VM and an 'real' instance of XP also. I have installed RoadTrip ( Mac) and Mapsource (XP)... Any suggestions about points 1 or 2 above would be appreciated. Jerry |
what people do not realize is that the topo maps also include all street maps for the entire USA.. I use my garmin on and off road which is why I bought the topo maps.. The city Nav just gives you a lot of useless information, like I need to know where another Starbucks is.. Let me see in so cal they are about 2 miles apart..

Topo vs. CityNav really depends on how you're going to use the device, particularly if you want to use it for things other than road cycling. For MTB and hiking then the Topo maps are more useful. OTOH, if you want to go road touring (also if you use the device for in-car navigation), esp. if covering parts of the country outside your local area, then the CityNav maps have useful POI data. You may not need to find the nearest Starbucks, but the location of the nearest grocery store can be quite helpful, as well as the location and phone number of the next motel when the weather starts looking worse. The CityNav maps cover all of the US and Canada for one price as opposed to the Topo maps which cover only individual regions.
If you can run MapSource on your Mac then I'd be inclined to go with the DVD - that way the maps are available for trip planning on your desktop in addition to being on the 705. |
I like the citynav because its nice when you are in the middle of nowhere and need to find some more fluids and a snack, just search for what you want and find the place that is closest to you.

I agree with prathmann. I will also add that the streets on the Topo maps are not very current or accurate. I have found that in newer neighborhoods the streets are missing and in some areas the streets on the maps are not were they are in reality. This means the GPS will think you are on a different street than you really are.
Socalrider, are the Topo maps autoroutable just the the City Nav maps? |
The all US topo map is not routeable, but the new 24k topo maps are. But the 24k topo maps are sold two at a time rather than the whole country.
I can't see any point in buying the sd card version, why would you not want to be able to put the maps on a computer? |
