yeah, I know they're world-renown for doing that...lol....but ultimately, I'm not too upset, i just wonder if there's some sort of tinkering I can do to get a strobe or if there's a new, current drop-in that would do the trick. Of course, at this rate, I suppose the nickel & dime DX investments could add up to something significant sooner or later.....maybe....

Hmm just received one today and it works fine.

well, fwiw, i finally picked it back up over the weekend & it occurred to me to try putting a few dimes at the end of the battery to shim up the fit with the rear cap spring. what was getting was a bit of a bounce where the connection would break and it would switch modes...it would do this when the clicky switch was used also...so it was frustrating & rather impossible to actually select one of the 5 modes. 2 dimes later and works just as it should...so I'm back to figuring out a clever way to mount the sucker. Go figure.

I'm very tempted to buy the light and drop in module. I already have a P7, so have the batteries and charger. Two quick questions:

Is this a worth while upgrade from the Planet bike Superflash? Is the difference significant? I cant find any compairsons between the two.

Secondly, How are you mounting it? Seeing the size is similar to the P7, I was trying to mount my P7 rear facing and couldn't get a satisfactory solution. I tried using the DX 8274 mount on the seat post. While this worked very well when I was off the bike, when I got on it rubbed against my thigh.

In terms of being visible to vehicles farther away from you , yes. I have mine mounted at a slight down angle, you don't want this flashing directly into drivers eyes. As far as mounting anything to your bike zip-ties are your friend. I have mine mounted under my rack pointing slightly down and to starboard.

since the thread has come back to life, I'll add two thoughts:

I've not found a mounting that's not pretty goofy (or rubs legs) for bikes without racks. With a rear rack, no worries. Right now, I've been experimenting with using conduit hanger and an old reflector mount.

I'm still having much inconsistency with the 5 modes working correctly...don't know if the unit gets hot, the switch is bad (or some other component), but most of the time I can jar the light to go from mode to mode...and I can't consistently get it so that the contact doesn't break and thus change modes while I'm riding. I've considered doing something like mounting the head in an old rear light and running the battery as an external deal...just an idea right now.

I have mounted the light facing to the rear using a scope mount . This has been on my bike for about a month of daily commuting. It is very secure rigid mount.

I run both the PB super flash AND the 501. If I had to run only 1 it would be the 501 (w/flasher drop in), hands down far brighter. But as discussed in this thread. It's a series of compromises

hmmm...I like that...might try one. Can you mount it to a seat stay? (ie, is the mount diameter small enough)
