Your Magicshine Setup

Great discussion on the Magicshine. Thanks to everyone for their contributions.

I plan to use mine on a road bike and would love to see where people are mounting the light, and how the cable is being routed? I'm not interested in helmet mount setups, as I don't plan to use mine that way. Any pictures of your road bike rig with the Magicshine would be greatly appreciated. If I've missed them in this post (or elsewhere on BF), please forgive me and share a link. Thanks!

I have two, both mounted just left of the stem (bike computer is to the right of the stem).

I initially had the battery mounted on the frames top tube, but moved it to underneath the stem and prefer it there. Excess connecting wire is folded over on itself and ziptied.

One of the shortcomings of the light has been the long cable from the lamp.

I recommended a friend of mine to get one and he got it yesterday and they have fixed the long cable.

Now the battery and the lamp have short cables and an extension cable is included for helmet users.

So, all you buyers who waited now get an improved version.

It is nice that Geoma/Magicshine are responsive to suggestions for improvements.

I am really GALD they come with the longer cable. I have two magic shines and have my cables running along the top frame to my saddle bag under the seat. That is were my battery packs are. If the cable were short I could not use the magic shine. Having the battery pack on the handle bars just does not look right. Also were they are at now saves them from falling off or getting wet and they are out of sight

I'm glad that you're "GALD" about the longer cable. If you'd bother to read it, it now comes with a shorter cable AND and extension. So now everyone should be happy.... people that want to mount the battery at the handlebars can use the short cable, people that want to mount it in the back can use the extension.

There is one thing I realized I don't like about the MS, the head unit is just annoying enough to take off that I wouldn't want to do it every time I leave the bike outside the store, but definitely easy enough for someone to swipe. Anyone come up with alternate methods of mounting?

Instead of alternative mounting.....maybe a cover for it to make it look like something no one would ever want to steal? Hypothetical here, 'cause mine's still on its way. But I used that same philosophical approach with my (then) high $ MTB when I used it to commute to school 20 years ago.

The body of the light head is a heat sink... if you cover it and it blocks heat dispersion, you're going to overheat the LED and it WILL fail....

Only when I leave the bike unattended, covering up ( hiding ) a lamp that is lit is a little, unproductive?

It seems like covering up the light is more work than just unhooking the o-ring and taking the light off.

If you want to leave the light on semipermanently so nobody removes it, my guess is a couple of zip ties could secure the light enough to make it too tough for a spur-of-the-moment thief to steal the light

True.

I was picturing something that would cover it up and still let the light out the front. I just leave the light head on the bike all the time and remove the battery pack. Wouldn't even do that most of the time except for that damn green 'steal me' light!

I've got the cable zip-tied to the frame... they're not getting the light without something to cut either the cable or the zip-ties. The fact that the light is mounted upside down (under the bar) also makes it less visible.

Finally used my MS last Friday. I used the low setting on average lit roadways and then on a largely unlit parkway and it was wonderful. Plenty of light to see and surprisingly even on low there was enough brightness to still see my light in passing car headlights. Just for the heck of it on a drak stretch of road with no approaching cars I flipped up to high. Truly amazing! A bright pool of light filling my lane with nice spill over onto the shoulder and even into the opposing lane. In fact the uniformity of the beam is much better on high power than on low. I want to ride with it more to assess how high I can aim the light before it annoys oncoming cars and riders -- so far the throw seems very good.

Good news about the new versions with shorter cables and a extension cable for those who need it. I think I want to experiment with mine to find a lower mounting point both to unclutter the handlebars as well as maximize shadows cast by objects in the roadway. I think that will be most useful on the unlit MUP I usually ride.

Here is my set up....ignore the road grime and the white zip ties. I moved the battery up to my stem and my wireless comp went nuts. So I moved it back to my top bar but ran out of black ties.

And yeah, I dig the mirror. I had to superglue it to keep it from moving but it works pretty good now.

OBXCycling,

Thanks for the picture. I hadn't thought of mounting the light under the bar. Looks like a great setup. Incidentally, I have a Cannondale R1000 with what looks like an identical paint job. Thanks again.

No problem. I am thinking about getting another one and mounting it directly over the first one. I just need to figure out a good way to make one shine slightly left and the the other slightly right.

Topeak and a few others have Bar Extenders that would allow you to get something close to what you want to achieve.

I tried the underbar mount too. I liked the light position, but it bugged me that my light was aimed right at my Shimano STI gear cables, so I moved it up top a little higher than the shifter cable.

I guess I could have also bought new Dura Ace STI levers with the hidden cables instead but didn't have a spare $450

Using Campagnolo 10 speed would take care of this issue, no overhanging cables..

I have an MS an order from an ebay/BF seller that is local to me, should be here in 1-2 days.. Will give a report..

Received my MS from Geoman, some thoughts.

First it came fully charged (I think) and a QC=Quality Control inspection sticker on the box lid.
I did receive the shorter cable to the lamp and a seperate extension cable which is about 40 inches in length. I am happy with this design, but would just cable tie the extra if I had the older style.
It is still 5 mode and the strobe mode is CRAZY. I actually wanted a strobe on my light which I had on my old Fenix, but this is definitly meant to do real damage. I think I will use the SOS and the strobe, just incase I'm being attacked(?) (really).

Next, the velcro pouch still has the plastic loops which seem to still serve no purpose. I did not receive a velcro strap to attach the battery to the bike, but I'll find an extra at home. This should of been included and resolved by now by Geoman and the factory.

I have not taken it for a ride yet, but I have 23 miles to ride home and will update when I get home.

Have a MS on the way from HK because of a really great deal. I am curious though if anyone is afraid of the assault crown on this light?

Might come in handy next time I'm assaulted and have to use my bike to defend myself. (Don't laugh, it's happened! TWICE!)
