What is a small mount to attach a flashlight to handlebars?
 

I bought a couple of these to mount flashlights to the front of my bike. They're pretty bulky, but work great on my cross bike because the interruptor levers hold the housing out from the handlebars. I've just built up a road/touring bike, and I'm going to need a new way to attach my light, because without the interruptors there just isn't enough room to cram the mount on there without pulling the cable out so hard it'd probably mess up the handlebar tape.

I'm having trouble finding a small piece of hardware that doesn't have much bulk right in the front of the handlebars where I don't have much room for bulk. Any ideas? I'm really hoping I can figure out a way to use the light I have, bike specific lights are less useful and a lot more spendy for the lumens/weight.

The rest is unrelated to the post, but just in case anyone is curious - Here's a picture of the whole bike, it's not fancy, but I'm quite pleased with it since I've built it from scratch exactly how I wanted it set up with a mixture of old parts I had and parts I was able to get on the cheap off Craigslist/garage sales.

It's a 2002 LeMond Buenos Aires frame/fork, a r700 compact double with an XTR rear derailleur/11-34 cassette, a light (albeit old and well used yet true) Rolf Sestriere wheelset, Ultegra 6500 shifters/front derailleur, Dura-Ace 7700 brakes, Easton CT2 seatpost, FSA k-force light saddle, Deda 215 handlebars, Profile Design Hammer OS stem with a pair of Candy C's. I haven't weighed it since finishing it yesterday - it's not a feather, but it's not heavy either, and I do enjoy the ride of steel.

Building your own bikes up is really a lot of fun, and the best part is that I had other parts on it until it was finished so I was able to build it functional originally, and ride it as I got it how I wanted it to notice the difference in each change I made. Here's a picture of the bike after I built it up with stuff I had originally - since then it's got a different crankset, wheelset, rear derailleur, handlebars, saddle, and stem - and it had brake interruptors.

i use this mount which might be less bulky than the one you have but yes, the cables do get in the way a little bit.

Perhaps a stem-cap mount?

masont, thanks for linking the picture of the mount on your bike. The DX site should include a similar picture.

It appears that you can only use fingers to tighten the mount. Does it appear to tighten securely with just your fingers?

As for mounting it on your other bike, could you just reverse the mount so that the bulky portion is positioned behind the bar and thus away from the cable? From the pictures, it seems like that might work, but you've probably already considered that.

You did a nice job with that Lemond. Lots of nice bits and wide gearing.

You cannot use this mount on oversize handlebars, but you have the right size. I've since inverted both these lights to avoid interference from the gear shift cables with the light beams and now enjoy unobstructed lighting from two P7s. I just loop the flashlight strap over the computer for added security and have no worries about the flashlight coming out of its mount.

You have plenty of room to do the same thing.

Has worked pretty well for me, even over rough terrain. The velcro straps don't take up much room, fit between cables and bars well, etc. I haven't tried these on oversize bars.
