Cyclo-computer wet weather durability
 

i just bought a cateye v3 and the main reason i did was the triple wireless features with the intergrated speed and cadence in one sensor. installed it today and got me thinking...

Do you guys roll with your cyclocomputer in the rain? if you do how does if fare in the weather? even if you do not ride with the actual computer in the rain, its not like the sensor just pops off either so i am also wondering how your sensors fare in the weather? do you take the batteries out of the sensor if you are going out in the rain?

Not the same computer.... but I've ridden with my Cateye Mity 8 in all sorts of downpours for hours on end without any issue.
I always though dielectic (sp is wrong, I'm sure) grease on the contacts would be a great idea.... but I never have done it (and my pockets stay clean when I put my computer in them).

I wouldn't submerse it in water, but I wouldn't worry about it either.

I've had Sigma computers for years, so I can't speak to the durability of the Cateye stuff. I've been caught in many downpours over the years with no ill effects. When I was in college the bike (and computer) lived on the balcony through two winters on the 3rd floor of our complex. Still worked every spring without a hitch. I would assume similar durability out of the Cateye stuff, but like I said, I've never owned one. Mine were also always wired computers. So that might have helped the durability of the sensors, and pickups.

I use a blackburn Delphi, I never even thought about taking it off in the rain. As long as I am riding. If the bike is just sitting outside, hopefully I remembered to bring it in. More importantly, I think the sun does far worse damage if it sitting int he same spot for just a few moments.

My experience also with the Cat-Eye wired computers. I have them on every bike, including two beaters that are only ridden in the rain, snow or other lousy conditions, and none have ever failed in any way. I've always thought you could mount these things on a submarine and have them work reliably. I see no reason why Cat-Eye wouldn't seal the wheel sensors just as well.

One thin I do is dab some silicone grease on the handlebar mount contacts. It keeps out water and grit and has no effect on the readings.

I have experience with Cat-eye and Sigma computers. I have always left my computers out in the rain, and have never had a problem.

My VDO computers have been in everything for -32c winters to massive rain storms without a problem.

I have an older Ascent Wireless 9 computer and I have zero problems in rain. They're prone to electromagnetic interference from bike lights though so you may need to space them far away from any lights.

Any bike computer I ever owned, CatEye mostly, was weatherproof. Actually, any bike specific gadget I ever bought was weatherproof so I was caught by surprise when I found out that MagicShine battery isn't :(
