Just buy two car headlights and strap them to your handle bars. No way would I pay $200 or $300 for those things.

Oh, it's only $26. Well, if you don't really need to see where you are going and just want it to comply with the law or have people see you, it's okay. There are some instructions on the internet I think for using car headlights on bicycles. Try instructables.com . I saw one on there a while back.

Below is the one that I purchased. It is from Germany and has 3 settings. I use the strobe during the day. Also get one for the rear of your bike - that one is even more important! Get one that is LED only!

I just ordered a Cygolite Mitycross (picked it up for a good price on eBay). I've heard good things about it. More expensive per lumen than the Magicshine, but much better built from what I've read.

I have the Cygolite Milion 150 and 200. Both purchased off e bay for good price. Can't go wrong with the Cygolite, beam pattern is like a floodlight and very bright. I mount the 200 on my helmet.

I've pretty much decided that since 200 lumen is all I need to see about 50-60 feet ahead - nobody needs any more. I've also discovered that the "47 Quark AA2" or "Fenix LD20 R4" both meet anyone's requirements for all the light they could need. And they are not junk - have great beam patterns - simply really good flashlights.

Both of these are "2xAA" flashlights - the only draw back is you need to be "bright enough" to mount them and realize the need to change batteries often...... they are $59 and $63 from foursevens.com

sold individually front and back and quite a bright, awesome light for getting noticed fast.
plus it will mount to bars of a number of sizes and you can take them on and off easy.

for those of you that don't know these guys are brighter than a pbsf:

A lot depends on where you ride, and how fast you want to go.

In the past I used the EL320.
It's not very bright, more of a 'be seen' light, good battery life, unless one of the four AA batteries gets weak, then it gets very dim.

For a single 'torch', look at the Fenix L2D or LD20, you can use it as a flashlight also.
The magicshine MJ808 is better, brighter, and can last much longer on a charge.
In the middle of winter, I use the MJ808 on low, charge it one a week, and L2Ds as backup/boost lights on the bars... more lights on the helmet (to each his own).

I would start with a good light for your needs and budget, and add more if needed.
