wiring a dynamo hub to front light and usb charger

hello. i have exhausted the search features on the forum and decided to post this thread. i plan to build or buy a usb charger (something like this) for a shimano alfine dynamo hub. i also plan to run a lumotec iq cyo front headlight.

i have never used or worked on a dynamo hub before, so forgive my ignorance. i want to know whether i will have to split the output from the dynamo hub before reaching the headlight, or if i can somehow run it in line, as though it were a taillight. i will not be using both at the same time. i will run my gps on battery power while the light is running. do i need to build a switch into the system? will i have to manually switch the cable running to the hub?

any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes you need a switch in the line to swap between the charger and light.

in that case i was considering building a switch into the box that will house the board for the usb charger, and add an additional output for the front light. does that sound doable?

Yes, get a centre off switch and then you can switch between charger/off/light.

Hi,

I have a Schmidt SON hub dynamo that I run with a number of configurations, the latest being a B&M Lumotec IQ Cyo R Senso LED and a Zzing power converter. Check out the Zzing at www.zzing.de.

Both the light and the Zzing are wired directly to the hub. I can't run both at the same time, so I make sure the light is off..........and the Zzing charges.

This method is approved by the Zzing manufacturers.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

DFD.

The connection comprises two electrical spades. One wire from each cable is connected to each spade. Hopefully that makes sense.

Regards,

DFD.
