SST-50 Flashlight
Hello,
Does anyone here have a set of SST-50 Flashlights? I have not tested my lights at night yet as I do not start late night school for 2 more weeks. Is it good for night commuting? How well does it light the road ahead of you? Peace & Love Reta |
I have a MG P Rocket flashlight that use a SST-50. It's brighter than the P7 and it seem like it is more efficient in the power use, but I have yet actually prove that. I will have to take the same 18650 battery and run on HI on both flaslight to see if it is. One day with more time, I might do that.
I mount the flashlight on my helmet. If I cast the beam on the same spot as my Magic Shine 900, the P Rocket will cover the MS light.....barely. This might be because the P Rocket has a more white color as compare to the slight greenish tint from my MS. I bought my MG P Rocket SST 50 light from Shiningbeam. |
I have had very good luck with shiningbeam lights over the years.. here is the link to the light above

Thats great, I was beginning to get a little worried. I am relieved after reading "** Compact size flashlight specially designed for bikers**"
I suspect some really dark roads on my way back home from school. I should buy another one and mount it on my helmet like you did. Don't know how reliable these lights are. What do you use to strap it down onto your helmet? |
I use these Twofish lockblocks from 4seven.com
http://www.4sevens.com/images/lockblock.gif http://www.4sevens.com/index.php?cPath=92 You may have to click on "Bikers Corner" on that page to see it. That link keeps readdressing me to the Login page...weird. Other used rubber band which works as well and much cheaper. |
If anyone's used both, how do these compare with the P7s?
|
TwoFish also has a heavier-duty model that I prefer for anything beyond the 2AA-size lights: http://www.batteryjunction.com/twofish-cycloblocks.html

The MG P Rocket is slightly brighter at close range with the P7 having a wider throw. At a distant of 30+ ft, the SST 50 is brighter. I also tried using the better AW 18650 battery in the P7 to see if it will be brighter but it did not make a difference. The MG P Rocket body is smaller and feel more solid when mounted on my helmet with the Twofish. I notice the model I got from shining beam is no longer sold. It was listed at 800+ lumen and a more white color output. The one they have now is the 700+ lumen at less white color, however from what I gather, most customer don't notice the difference. The price is almost double of a P7. Probably not worth replacing a P7 unless your P7 died or having problems. |

I load some pictures of the MG P Rocket side by side with the P7 along with a shot of the beam at a wall. These are not the best picture and I did not have any specific setting such as F-stop or Shutter speed. Just general pictures. You can get more better detail at CP forum for more specific detail of the MG P Rocket or SST50. In all pictures, the P7 is on the left and the SST50 MG P Rocket is on the right. Except the one where the P7 is on top and the Rocket is at the bottom. I used a welding lens to dim out the light so that you can see the difference in the led/emitter design.
Edit: The model I have which they now don't sell was a Premium cool white. They only offer that now in the SST 50 Thrower. The SST50 Rocket only available in the Neutral White. |

FWIW I use the older version of the light with an MC-E emitter, and it's head and shoulders above the DX light it replaced in all aspects. |
Thanks Colleen C!
My P7 is still doing great after 18 months so I'll keep using it. I do like to see what the new stuff is like tho. Who knows when I might need a replacement. |
