Gps only

Have any of you tried a simple Garmin or other brand of GPS unit on your bike? I'm thinking I don't need the same stuff I already have my NiteRider computer for. Just a good GPS with street and trails maps that will mount on the stem or bars. Anyone have any experience with it?

Yes I use the Garmin Oregon 550 on my mountain bike and also used it on my road bike.. It is a very nice setup.. If I had to do over again I would buy the Dakota 20 series, just a little smaller verison of the Oregon but bigger than the bike specific Garmin computers like the 305 or 705..

Do not even consider the Dakota 10, it has no memory card slot and is very limited..

here are a couple reviews

I have a Garmin 60CSx that I use for hiking that I also mount on my bikes (road and mountain). I also then use it to look at my rides on ridewithgps.com (which is more just for fun that anything).

Logical next question: Where would be the best place to buy a Garmin Dakota 20?

Great. Thanks for narrowing that down for us. Looks like the New York City Yellow Pages

Just go to an REI and look at them.

Try again. REI has the Garmin units with cadence, etc. I'm thinking more along the lines of a GPS unit that's kinda like the Dakota 20, or similar with basic GPS and possibly altimeter. Some GPS unit that's really durable and waterproof for road and trail use.

Sure, if you're looking in the cycling part of the store. But they also have the more hiking-oriented units like the Dakota models. Their prices aren't usually the best, but they do have an excellent customer service policy which can come in handy for GPS units that sometimes don't stand up to the vibration and shock of cycling use.

I'm still using my 11 year old Garmin eMap as my bike computer. Works great and lets me automatically show where photos were taken on a map of a ride (or other trip):
