Contour helmet mount options
 

I purchased a ContourHD 1080p that came with a flat surface mount for non-vented helmets as well as a goggle strap mount for skiing/snowboarding. I need to mount it on my vented helmet that I use to road bike and, to my great disappointment, nothing came in the box that would allow me to use my $300 toy right away on my 3 upcoming rides this weekend.

I looked around and Contour makes a Vented Helmet Mount, however the reviews for it are really poor - most customers on Amazon say the mount broke, in some cases right away before they even got to use it for the first time. Review titles such as "Don't buy this if you value your camera", "Pin Broke Off the Base Right Away!!!" and "Not a steady mounting system" and ratings of 1/5 (minimum possible), I have two options: return it, or find an alternate mounting solution.

Anyone out there with this camera (any Contour, they all have the same mounting system) using a helmet mount? What was your solution? Any way to improvise something, like using rubber bands and/or glue/duct tape or something and use one of the other mounts? I really want it on my helmet so that it pans with my head, but don't want to waste $300. Granted some of the reviews appeared to be from MTB riders, but I sometimes ride MBT too and regardless, I want a mount that is sturdy enough to resist pretty much anything my head can on any bicycle. Don't want to have to worry about the camera, I literally want to put it out of my mind and ride as if it wasn't there.

Do they have a chest harness? I have a GoPro and I started with the helmet mount. The problem is with no references it's hard to tell what your actually doing. The footage could have bee taken from the nose of a car. The chest harness brings the action lower down so you can see your bars and what is ahead of you.

Depends on how much you like your helmet, I epoxied the flat mount to the side of one of my helmets with Permatex plastic epoxy. I just scuffed up the desired surface area of the helmet, completely removed the double sided tape on the flat mount adapter and clamped the adapter overnight with a C clamp while the epoxy dried.

I didn't like the Blair Witch effect of the helmet mount, so now I run both my Contours solidly mounted onto my bike.

The vibration doesn't mess with your picture? I tried mounting my GoPro using the handlebar mount, but vibration from road surface imperfections made the picture quite unwatchable. I'm trying to find ways to decouple the camera somewhat from the object to which its mounted.

I guess I'll try the handlebar mount. I really don't want to permanently alter my helmet, mostly because I will probably change helmets often. There's no chest mount that I know of for the Contour, but from what I've seen out there I would personally prefer the view from up high. The key for me though is to be able to track what I (my head) is looking at, which neither handlebar nor chest mount would give me. For example, if I want to get a driver's license plate or something.

Keep the suggestions coming, it's very anticlimactic to have this toy sitting here and not being able to use it. And it's not like I can pick up these mounts locally, I have to order and have them shipped, given the holidays it's a week+ out.. :cry:

I mounted my cameras solidly to the frame, and the Contour picture stabilization takes care of most minor distortions. All I want is to get a clear shot of a license plate number, and vehicle description, and in the highest quality 1080p setting I get some very detailed stills.
