Helmet light recommendation?
 

Anyone? Thanks! No room to mount a headlight on my handlebars.

I use a Princeton Tec EOS-bike as a supplement to my handlebar lights. But it sounds like you want something as a sole source of light. I have a Princeton Tec Apex Extreme that I use for outdoors, camping and hiking. The thing is so bright that I've been toying with the idea of getting another one to use on my helmet. It is as bright as a Dinotte 200L. There is not a "Bike" version, but it could be removed from the head-strap and Velcro used to affix it to the helmet. In winter months I would place the battery pack inside my jacket to keep the batteries warm. In fact, I do that now when I'm hiking in cold weather.

I got a Cygolite Expilion 250 for Christmas. I'm using it as a helmet light to augment the light on the bar, a MagicShine 900.

I'm thinking you could use either of these as a helmet/primary light. The MagicShine will provide more light, but the Cygolite is no slouch. It's nice to have something I can aim.

Get a Topeak bar extender and mount that on your stem. The extender can fit two lights. Mounting it on the stem will also make ot center on the handlebar.

For helmet light, a Titan or Magicshine with the external battery pack in your pocket will do. The other choice will be a flashlight with a Twofish block, however if you choose the flashlight route, I suggest you go with 18650 battery flashlight for the brightness and longer runtime.

I use something like what Colleen suggests. I have a Minoura Swing Grip mounted just above the head tube (whatever that part is called...riser, steerer?) so that the lights turn with the bars and are below the handlebar bag. One advantage of this over the Topeak (from what Colleen has said elsewhere) is that the Swing Grip has a range of almost 180 degrees in any gradation you want. I have at times raised or lowered the angle 1-2mm so that the bag will or wont rest on it.

I've hung a pair of Dinotte 200s (pic), all sorts of 18650 flashlights using TwoFish, Magicshine, packs etc. The diameter is a little less than handlebars so some mounts need spacers to be able to bite down. They are pretty durable, mine have lasted 2 yrs+, though if you hung something heavy it might not last.

It is primarily meant for the stem, but they seemed they'd be in my way if I were to take a trip over the handlebars. Down under, they are much less noticeable to thieves which I rather like. The downside is that it frees up enough room on the bars that I feel somewhat obligated to fill up with just one more light... :lol:

$16 from DealExtreme... 200 lumens and runs 1+ hour on a single 'AA' battery. Gives off a nice bright flood of light.....

Minoura makes a couple of things that will allow you to mount a light to your fork or to your quick release axle. One issue you might consider is that helmet light does not keep you legal on the road.

My experience with that type of light is that they really only perform close to the stated rates on Li Ions and gobble up AAs. The small surface area of 14500 based lights means they heat up quickly and dim. The ones I have are not bad and put out a lot of light for their size, just not for very long.

For the same money and weighing only .5 oz more than the 14500 size, you can get a TR801 18650 light. It has a very tight beam and decent runtime. The ad says 50 min, but mine will run close to 2 hours (I dunno the actual time as I have never had it shut off, and I use it mainly to augment bar lights on really dark, fast, curvy parts of the ride.)

Even better are some of the XP-G lights you can now get for $24 to $50. ~300 Lumens, 2-3 hr runtime.

Personally, I love the light. I use rechargeable 'AA's which is huge. I dont want to be ordering "weird" size batteries and also want access to familiar battery sizes at stores if I suddenly need a battery.

It is also very bright!

Helmet light for what purpose?

I've got a Princeton Tec Eos on one helmet and a Petzl Tikka XP on another. I think the EOS has a little better high beam for emergency illumination of the road, I'll double check and get back on that. The Petzl XP has a much brighter strobing flash whereas the EOS is simply an on/off high beam. What is cool about the Petzl is that there's a flood lens that can go over the led for better dispersion . I slide the flood lens over and angle it up as it is too bright IMHO to shine at other cars and riders in strobe function. It also has a red led.

Hey guys, I would like to recommend the FEREI M9 flash light.
I have been using this set up for the past few weeks now and like it a lot. Only thing that on high (480 lumens) it will last you about 1 hour.
