Edge 800 vesus 705

The 705 is a tad bit more expensive. But when I do a comparison on Garmins web page I don't see why the 705 would be more expensive. It looks like the 800 can do more on the comparison chart. Does anyone know why the 705 is more expensive?

I don't see the Edge 705 being more expensive than the 800 at *any* of the major retailers, for the equivalent packages.

It sounds like you might be comparing 705 packages that include maps, etc to the base 800 without any maps or sensors.

If you go to Garmins Web Page it shows the 705 at 499 and the 800 at 449.00. I believe the page linked is the base units with no options.

Right, but MSRP has absolutely nothing to do with what retailers are selling it for, especially when a product has been superceded. As such, the 705 is currently significantly cheaper than the 800 for equivalent packages.

Read the reviews on Amazon.com . They're not all glowingly in favor of the 800 over the 705. For me the deal-breaker is the new proprietary, binary data format replacing the text-based GPX/TCX format, which you can manually post-process and for which there are lots of 3rd-party tools.

Go to Garmin's Edge forums. You'll see that the 800 is having a lot of teething pains right now. Even the 705 was never totally straightened out. I have a 705 and am waiting for the issues with the 800 to get resolved before I'd think of switching...

Looigi - what significant issues does the 705 still have? I was actually considering getting one since the prices are dropping.

Thanks!

When navigating downloaded GPX tracks it will sometimes take a diagonal shortcut between two arbitrary track points, skipping over roads. This is my main issue and it's more prevalent over longer more complicated tracks. Some issues with auto-stop-start function. Errors with distance when used with a powertap hub. These things depend on the version of f/w. Version 3.3 came out a month or two ago and a some have tried it and gone back to 3.1. Version 3.2 came out ~6 months ago as was pulled because it was too buggy. I've had equal luck with 3.1 and 3.3.

If I were to buy right now and had to decide between the two, I'd probably to for the 800. It's got bigger problems than the 705 but I'm sure most will get ironed out over the next 6mo to a year.
