On Guard Lock Problem!
I have a new (1 year) OnGuard Pitbull Mini U-lock that just broke. The plastic on the outside cracked and fell off. I only dropped it 2 few from my bike. I am not sure that I can still use it? I mean it doesn't look very strong now. I had a previous OnGuard Lock and thought they had fix this very irritating problem. Thanks

hmmm I was gonna buy this lock

A plastic casing shouldn't be a key part of the security. Some people in SSFG have removed the casing to make a slimmer lock. Can you see any moving parts, or does it just look ugly? How about taping over the cylinder?

Thanks everyone. Yeah I just put some black tape on the cylinder. I guess I'm just picky. It looks like a Kryptonite Evolution Mini almost now.

i've got a "beast" 5017 chain. the chain is poor quality, but the lock (which is also poor quality) uses a lot of plastic to make itself look bigger.
for quality locks, stick with high end kryptonite, high end abus and bikeregistry chains. the on-guard stuff tries to compete with kryptonite, but it's really wal-mart quality crap. any plastic/vinyl over the lock should be there to protect the lock's finish and to protect your bike's finish... not to make the lock look bigger. i've sawed through these types of locks and the plastic... well, it's like sawing through plastic ;) plastic won't keep your bike from getting stolen. nor will metal if it isn't properly hardened. |
