Tung Lin dynamo 12v/6w - Good choice for budget bike power?

Tung Lin dynamo 12v/6w - Good choice for budget bike power?
I'm thinking about maybe getting a Tung Lin dynamo and building my own rectifier/voltage regulator for it. That's not a problem. Appearance is not as important to me as reliability.
Is it a solid, weatherproof dynamo?
If it has more power than the 3watt dynamos and is reliable - I could probably make use of the extra power. I have a GPS device that has batteries which on a good day might last at best 4 hours.. it takes USB power. As does my cell phone. So a dynamo for lights that could also power/charge the other stuff when the batteries ran out would be great.

Your choice, I suppose, but you're going to have problems finding a readily available selection of lights to fit.

I bet I already have one in my boxes of e-junk. You know how common they are? They are everywhere in electronics.
They are called switching power supplies.. Or, use what's called a Buck converter (or a buck-boost converter) built around a hand wound toroid coil (or coils) to get nice well regulated DC at whatever voltage you want, enclosing it completely in a metal box and filtering the DC output(s) for RFI.
Maybe thats what's in here. I'm sure this box is state of the art.
Or, if you dont care so much about efficiency, use four diodes and something like this. That should prevent overvoltage.

I haven't used the Tung Lin, but have had good experiences with other budget bottle dynamos (incl. 12V ones) so I wouldn't anticipate any real problems.
I've had no water or other issues with the dynamos themselves, but sometimes connectors haven't been very well sealed and started to corrode. A little sealant applied in advance can eliminate those problems. The other weather-related issue is that the drive wheel can slip on a slick tire surface. I've only rarely had this cause a problem in rain, but it was a big issue in slush and snow.
Sounds like you already know what you want to do about setting it up to get regulated DC instead of the unregulated AC output of the dynamo.
