MapMyRide Live Tracking?

Has anyone got the live tracking feature to work. I got my smartphone set to tweet when my workout starts but on the link to the website says that the user is not live tracking even though I have it set to do so.

thought it would be a good safety feature.

I seem to have the same problem. I was in a bike accident a few years ago and my wife gets pretty worried when I'm out on a ride now. So I thought the live tracking would be a perfect way for he to monitor where I'm at while I'm out on the road.

Has anyone had any luck with live tracking? I'd love to support MMR but I need this functionality to work. I've read so many disappointing reviews of MMR and I'm thinking this isn't going to work out. Any information would be appreciated.

Looks like I figured it out. First of all check out this video...

https://vimeo.com/24838916

It's all about making sure your privacy setting is set to "public, share with everybody" under your Profile Privacy Settings. Check the video above and it will show you all you need to know. Seems to be working well, which will make my wife happy.

Not being tech savvy at all could you help me understand this better?
What device does the cyclist have and how does say my wife at home track me?
Thanks

I just tried to use Mapmyride again after an absence, and after wasting another couple hours of my life this morning, i now remember why I deleted it from my phone and favourites.

The live tracking, once so easy, is a real PITA now. Also, the elevation data is so wrong it's laughable. Even if you have elevation data, it scrubs your data and uses it's own erroneous data source.

I was searching for a ride for this weekend to plug into my Garmin. I knew the elevation data was something like 4000 feet of climbing, yet mapmyride said 1500ft, i finally find other plots on bikely and ridewithgps, who correctly report 4500'..

iditchedmymapmyride app.

Tom,
Seems MMR works with iPhone and android mobile devices, and used in conjunction with a home computer you should be able to get the device to "live track" whomever has the associated mobile device. You have to be sure you set your profile preference on the computer side to "public, share with everybody", then you activate the record workout on the mobile device and choose the live tracking in script. At least it's supposed to work.

Last weekend I headed out for a nice 40 mile ride and I set the iPhone appropriately. I told my wife to refresh the page that had the live tracking and watch how fast I roll. 35 miles later I called to see how it looked and she told me that the live tracking said it was working (live tracking), but that I hadn't left the driveway yet!

No idea if the elevation is correct, I live in southern NJ where we don't have hills but the program is essentially a PIA. I'm not at the point where I'm giving up on it yet, but I am close. Problem is that I really could use a tracking program, so I really want this to work. Will try again this weekend.

I worked out why I could not get live tracking to work. It is an "MVP" feature which costs money.

Does anyone know a free live tracking service?

The video kindly posted above is 42 minutes long.

Rather than make ones ride public, is it not possible to log into ones map my ride account and see where one is (or rather let ones spouse see where one is) from inside ones account?

I have made everything public anyway.

I found this page

I never got MapMyRide live tracking to do anything before, when it was not restricted to those paying a monthly subscription.

I'm using the Runtastic Road Bike app Pro version now, for live tracking. They offer live tracking without a monthly subscription, but with extra features if you do have a subscription. I believe those viewing the live tracking have to have a (free) Runtastic login.

you don't seem to be able to access anything on mapmyride without an account, which seems like they don't want any new users. I'm going to speculate that they will not be around that much longer

Thank you for the runtastic tip, and for the heads up on the possible immanent demise of mapmywhatnot.

Are there anyothers? Something with a more cycling flavour?

Great info but one quesstion. Are you sayin that this service is with iphone or android only? I looking into ways to do live tracking without having to pay $500 for a new garmin plus purchase a new phone. I don't have a smart phone but would be willing to purchase one as ny dumb phone is quite old but can't afford to alos add $500 garmin to the mix.

my point being that everyone you want to have tracking you would have to sign up. I guess a spouse would be willing, but others would not. Someone recently posted a question about a mapmyride route, just to look at it you have to sign up. I just closed the window instead.

I use a spot because I ride in areas with no cell coverage quite a bit. But that costs $150 a year + equipment.

I don't know if you can buy a smart phone that doesn't incorporate a GPS. Most of the navigation apps use the internal GPS

Pardon my ignorance but I don't understand. My friend has the 810 and uses strava so is his garmin sending me and his invitees his ride info or is his smart phone sending it thru a strava app? Is it duplicating? Why have both? I understand that the garmin wont send his ride info without the bluetooth enabled smart phone but what I hear here is the smartphone don't need the garmin, just a strava like app. His info is updated every 60 seconds.

Yes, the smartphone can do live tracking without the Garmin. Heck, the smartphone can basically do everything the Garmin can. Yet people still buy Garmins!

The Garmin 810 provides the GPS information to the phone. That means the phone doesn't have to run its power-hungry GPS.

That is, using the Garmin should allow the phone to run longer that it would if it had to do the GPS work.

I think adding the smartphone comms to the 810 was an act of desperation on Garmin's part. However, I like the Garmin and wouldn't want to mount a smartphone on my handlebars. Of course, since I carry 2 gps devices, I have thought it was a little redundant.

I never quite understood the version of Spot that uses a smartphone for comms, that seems like a waste.

If you have an android, look at the app greenalp.com. It's free and works pretty well. It doesn't seem to drain the battery more than usual.

Lots more options e.g. Mytracks

Thank you all for the suggestions. I see the problem with map my ride. I would like to share to non members (not that anyone wants to know) and it needs a log in. It is more the possibility that anyone might be able to see my ride, that I am riding in public as it were, that seems to encourage me not to slack off.

I also see that there are quite a few options.

I am going to try Mytracks, a free app from google first.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...mytracks&hl=en

I found it from this article about bike mapping which recommends 6 sites
https://bicycling.about.com/od/howtor...ping_tools.htm
the first ("ride with GPS") usually works with Garmin but mentions some android apps.
https://ridewithgps.com/help/Android
If Mytracks does not work for me I may purchase Velodroid (about 3USD)
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...elodroid&hl=en

There are also more random lists here
https://www.moreofit.com/similar-to/w...ike_Mapmyride/

Hi, I've developed a free live tracking app call mapper which is available for iphone and requires no login, no subscription. Please take a look https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/mapper/id649524893?mt=8

new version (should be available next week) will include sharing for facebook, twitter.

Any feedback would be great!

We've listed at least four different functions.

Where do I want to go? (e.g., Ride with GPS)

Where I can I upload what I did so others can see it later? (e.g., Ride with GPS)

How can I share where I am right now? (e.g., Find My Friends, mapper)

How can I share where I am right now and where I've been on this ride, and map routes and displayed finished rides? (e.g., Map My Ride MVP, Runtastic)

Another app that would really put your wife's mind at ease is "Road ID" It not only tracks you but it will alert your wife and other contacts if you stop moving for 5 minutes. It gives you one minute to cancel the notification if you are intentionally stopped. If the notification of no movement is sent your contacts can try to call you and if they don't get an answer they can see your location on a map. They could then provide that information to appropriate authortiies or drive to your location.

Gary

It's all about making sure your privacy setting is set to "public, share with everybody" under your Profile Privacy Settings. Check the video above and it will show you all you need to know. Seems to be working well, which will make my wife ha
