Gearing up on a budget?
I'm back to commuting after a five year hiatus. As such, the old Catseye mph cyclocomputer is a bit aged. I have, however been recording my rides via MapMyRide and my iPhone 4s, which has been nice, except the MMR calorie estimation seems WAY too high. I think I need to invest in a few things. A heart rate monitor and something better to track MPH and perhaps cadence and/or watts?
My questions are as follow:
1. What should I purchase first, HRM? Cadence? The big reason for the upgrades to better track my calories. I am trying to lose weight.
2. My budget is $200.00 a month in this effort.
3. Getting as much integrated onto the iPhone is preferable as I do not want to have to sync devices to a computer and I really like the wireless sync to websites like map my ride.
I appreciate and look forward to your ideas.

I think you can get ANT+ attachments for your iPhone so it would all be there. Does MayMyRide allow tracking HR and cadence?
I got a Cateye Micro like this for live speed info but keep my logged stuff on my phone or garmin HRM.
Here is my setup and it works for me. Does not meet all your criteria to have it on the phone and not have computer sync but it works for me. It also didn;t cost me a fortune.
Cyclemeter on the iPhone. Tracks ride, gps, distance, speed, avg, speed, etc, per ride,
Garmin FR60 with wireless HRM chest strap-Monitors HR continuously through the ride and I have an ANT+ stick in my laptop at home which automatically downloads the workout onto Garmin Connect website. Also handy for other workouts I might add, my main reason for not having a phone integrated one. If I get REALLY sweaty or am jumping around a lot while working out I don't wanna have my phone on me. I plan on getting the cadence sensor soon. It does not include GPS on this model but on the Garmin Connect you can enter Courses and track them that way. I ride certain paths all the time and when I go to the site I just choose the course I rode and move on.
Cayeye computer on bike to track like mileage and whatnot.
Costs:
Cyclemeter: $1.99 app store
Garmin FR60: $100 best buy, Cadence sense is $40 i believe
Cateye: $30 or $40 on ebay but I am sure they sell for similar in stores.
That all puts you under your $200 but, as stated before, does not meet your all in one criteria. Maybe the ANT+ attachments mentioned earlier will do what you need.

I should add that I like my setup for the watch and the iPhone app because it provides a backup if one of them freaks out. I can still at least track my activity one way or another.

I believe that mapmyride app on the phone will sync with both that kit linked above and the bluetooth HRM on the sam site as well.
I'm probably going to narrow down to either the link about, or this: https://www.mapmyfitness.com/shop/fit...s/wahoo-bluehr
For this months budget and the other for the next. Just not sure which is more important.
Thanks for the help!

I would go HR first since you are trying to lose weight. That is more important than your speed. IMO

Calories burned is never particularly accurate on bike computers.
Money is probably better spent on a set of scales and a pen and paper to track diet/weight/exercise.

That is why I suggested the HRM. That should be really close to actual numbers for calories if it is basing it on the Avg. HR over a ride.

If it has to be on the iPhone, I would get a whole Wahoo setup using their new Bluetooth 4.0 stuff. That's the Blue HR you linked to and the Blue SC for speed and cadence. I would then ditch mapmyride and go with Cyclemeter, which is, in my opinion the best cycling app on the iPhone. If battery becomes a concern, they sell a case (w/o ANT+, you won't need it with the Blue HR and Blue SC) that has an extended battery option. It is a cool setup that I had long considered myself, but the bulkiness and battery life issues have steered me towards likely getting a Garmin Edge 500 instead.
