Least expensive computer with gps maps/directions?
So I was out for a ride today and the wire connecting my bike computer to the cadence/speed sensors broke (also my chain fell off my big chainring to between the rings and the pedal - but I was at the top of a hill and able to coast the last couple hundred yards home - so all in all, it was a pretty crappy ride). So anyway, I'm thinking about a new computer.
I'm just a recreational rider so I don't really need heart rate or anything like that at this time. What I do like to do is go out for a ways and get myself lost and then pull out a map or just by guessing find my way back home again to explore new areas/routes. Since I need a new computer anyway, I was wondering if ones with gps that have turn by turn directions have come down to more reasonable prices. I mean you can get a tomtom or something for fairly cheap. Are there any similarly inexpensive options for the bike? As a note, I don't have a smart phone (or actually any cell phone other than the pay as you go phone I take with me for emergencies only), so an app isn't going to work. thanks. |
Can't think of any bicycle-specific GPS computers with maps that are inexpensive. Hiking-specific GPS computers are much cheaper, but also bulkier.

Guess I should look into another computer. I really liked the reliability of my cateye strada cadence wired computer (well, right up until this wire tearing incident). I'd previously had a wireless computer and I had lots of interference and battery issues with that, but there were no ugly wires hanging about to tear. I wonder if I should try wireless again, or go with another wired one (or just see if I can get new wires/sensors for my current computer). Might be time to upgrade (which is always fun), but this one worked for me, so going with what works is nice too.

I like the Strada.. For the money, its a great deal. Getting ready to get another one, white, for $44, New, and free shipping.

Yeah, I could just buy new wires for the one I have for ~$25-30. I might just do that as it works fairly well.
