Garmin edge 705 navigation question

I have an edge 705 and just recently updated the firmware to ver. 3.3. Big mistake, I can't seem to navigate any of my routes (GPX) anymore. Every time I try to navigate a GPX route the unit shuts off before the route is calculated. I was able to get a route to work but it kept "short cutting" my route at a point where two segments crossed, effectively cutting out 15 miles.

I'm trying to find a way to continue to use the 705 without having to move to the 800. I would like to create a ride on ridewithgps then load the file to the Garmin. I would like turn by turn cues, with the visual purple arrow and street name on the device. And most importantly I do not want the device to short cut the route. I think the tcx files work like that, operate like a cue sheet with the turn alerts etc, but I am still pretty new at this.

So if you don't mind I'd like to hear what tips any of you might have. I appreciate any help you can give me, thanks.

Ken

In Settings>Routing, have you set Recalculate to "Off"? At the very least set it to "Prompted", not "Automatic". Automatic is a terrible setting because as soon as you deviate from a planned route, it reroutes you and you have no way of recovering your original (therefore, no way to find your way back on course).

I find that when you have a route with overlapping segments it's better to break it up. Otherwise, even if it doesn't alter your route the GPS gets confused about where on your route you are and keeps telling you to make a U-turn.

Garmin used to have older versions of the Edge 705/605 firmware available for download but unfortunately has decided to remove all but version 3.30. It's unlikely they'll continue to develop and fix bugs in the firmware as the 605 and 705 are discontinued.

It is possible to revert to 3.1 if you want. You simply need to copy the 3.1 gsc file to your unit, turn it on and it will install 3.1. I run 3.1 on mine as it's been more reliable than 3.3 for the way I use the unit. If you need the 3.1 file, I can email it to you. PM me.

I am having the same problem. I used the navigation feature for almost 2 years, then it stopped working. I didn't notice if it as around the same time I updated the software, but I did that too. I'm gonna take Looigi up on his offer. :-D

I tried to format the 705 drive on my Mac (bad idea) and I ended up bricking the device. It will work as a speedometer with HR, but it no longer connects to my computer. Garmin offered to repair the device for roughly $120, with a 2-4 week turn around. I bought an edge 800 instead, and I'm quite happy with the upgrade.
