Wireless computers for the rear wheel???
 

I did a search, and browsed through the first several pages, and didn't find what I was looking for, so...

With the onset of colder weather, and the fact that I'm pretty much a weenie about riding in said colder weather, it's about time for me to remount my bike on the trainer and take up residence in front of the TV for riding.

My question is this: are there any (reasonably priced) wireless bike computers that will function reliably on the rear wheel?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I have two Bontrager Trip 4Ws, and they do not function reliably when mounted on the rear wheel.

I'm not sure why you want a wireless computer in that situation. Nashbar had a cheap computer with a rear wheel mounted wired sensor that I considered, but did not buy. You might look at that.

i want a wireless computer, regardless, for normal day to day use. but. i also need one that works off of the rear wheel for winter/indoor use.

Coming from someone who used to have a rear wheel sensor for speed and cadence, I no longer see a need for that info when on a trainer. The trainer is about intensity and time. Any mph or distance numbers have no relation to actually riding in the great outdoors. As far as cadence, "slow", "fast", "faster" and "really fast" are probably all you need.

If you need new computer and want cadence for riding outside, then by all means look for one. But I wouldn't spend the money for just being on the trainer.

as much as anything else, i'm looking to replace my computer in general, not just for trainer-time. and while it's not "necessary" to have all of the info while on the trainer, i like to have it anyhow. and i don't really have any specific reason for wanting wireless, "just because" i suppose. :)

Then I guess it depends on you definition of reasonable. I have a Cateye double wireless which has a speed and cadence sensor that you mount on the left chainstay. Sort of pricey and a bit fidgety to set up, but it works well.

USe them on my wife and sons bikes on the rear wheel and they work fine

Buy a set of rollers. No need to change your bike then....

If you have a smart phone, get one of the smart phone apps like Cyclemeter (iPhone) for about $5. Then, presuming your smartphone is capable of BT 4.0, get a wahoo fitness BT cadence and speed sensor for your back wheel for about $60. It'll also talk to a BT heart monitor sensor too.
