So I picked up a Garmin GSC10 speed/cadence sensor after reading that my Samsung S4 (with Android 4.3 or later) has native ANT+ support, along with several other Android phones and iPhones. Then I found that Endomondo, even the free version I have, has built-in ANT+ speed and cadence support. Nice.

So off to the LBS and tested the GSC 10 and it worked. No need for a dedicated cycling computer now. Even the guys at the LBS were not aware this was possible.

Find your device: THIS IS ANT - ANT+ in Phones and Tablets . If if has built-in support for ANT+ then great, if not you need to use a dongle to add that support or switch to Bluetooth sensors. If you use ANT+ then look at your tracking software for support.

I use the free version of Endonomdo (https://www.endomondo.com/home) on my S4, which has under Settings > Accessory Settings > ANT+ Sensors the ability to connect your sensor. Set your sensor to pair mode and click the Scan button. it will sync the sensor(s) and then Connect.

Install sensor and start a workout in Endomondo. It will automatically sync and if you setup the Speed or Cadence as display items you will see them. So far in my testing it is not constant output, it will flash 85 then 0 then 85 then 0, etc. but it is a lot cheaper than a dedicated computer. Seems to be fairly accurate though.

Its up to you how you want to mount your phone. I have not saved a workout yet as I am only testing so I do not know if the cadence it stored in the workout history (on device or online)

Its working great, btw. Reporting online is showing cadence. On the device you real time cadence but can not see the history of the cadence for the ride.

From what I learned recently researching a similar question, the iphone 4 uses an older version of bluetooth, not bluetooth LE. You may be limited to using an ANT+ dongle.

It's still new but BTLE seems like it's the way to go with using the smartphone in this way (unless your phone is already one of the few that supports ANT+). I'm not sure if spending extra for an ANT+ dongle for the iPhone 4 makes sense.

You only need the BTLE stuff for cadence or HR. The phone will do speed/distance well enough without a wheel-rotation sensor.

The Wahoo ANT+dongle is $60 and will only work with the 30 pin connector (rather than the lightning connector Apple uses now).

I use my Iphone 5 with the Wahoo bluetooth heart rate sensor and the bluetooth speed and cadence sensor. Works beautifully. I use the Wahoo fitness app and then upload to Strava. Battery life can be an issue so I use an external battery to power my phone.

Have you any idea how Endomondo deals with the speed sensor part? I have a Garmin Edge 500 and I'm aware that it uses the speed sensor but does internal calibration using GPS; I just wondered if Endomondo did the same sort of thing.

I have no idea if it calibrates on the move or not. I do know that I can put the bike on my rack and crank the pedals and it thinks I am moving. You can specify the wheel diameter so you can adjust that a little at a time to beter fit what your GPS says though.
