I've never had a bike computer before. What "features" do you usually look for or is important?

What do you want to do with it?

On my commuter I have a very simple little Cateye. Wireless because it is neater. I basically just use it for mileage and for time.

On my road bike I have a Garmin 500. I collect all sorts of data. I have the cadence sensor, HR strap, and sometimes I borrow a wheel with a powertap hub.

Depends on what you want to do. If it is for exercise I think the minimum should be speed, heart rate and cadence. You should also consider if gps is needed to track your course, compare with others online and for navigation.

But why not get the cheapest wired ones to start out with, that should set you back 20 buck or so, and then decide if you need more?

I've never had a computer that did as much for me as my iPhone. If I had to NOT use the phone, I my Garmin 305 served me well.

usage would be for training and recreation

Cadence, weatherproof, max/average speed, trip distance, ride time, clock, stop watch, auto start stop, wireless

backlight would be nice
Things I think I don't need: Heart rate feature. I have never used a HRM while biking except for when I'm running. GPS, temperature

I've talked to a few people and they recommended Sigma or Garmin.
