Garmin Edge 500 won't connect to my computer?

I tried everything I found on the Garmin sight, and checked all over the internet, I tried downloading the Communicator Plugin, which it worked.. at least I think I did?... But no matter what I do, EVERY time that I've plugged it into my computer via the USB cord, nothing happens. I know it's not the plus because it charges and everything, but nothing shows up or happens when I plug it in. I even enabled all of the correct options like the 'ActiveX' stuff on 'Tools' for the internet explorer. I have a ride tomorrow and want to upload it to Garmin Connect. Thanks a lot in advance!

The fact that a device charges properly with a USB cord doesn't necessarily mean the cord is not defective for communications purposes. It's generally a good idea and simple enough to try another cord when you're having issues.

I have a somewhat similar problem with my Garmin 500 Edge. Maybe one of you can suggest a solution.

FACTS: I recently bought anew laptop. It runs on Win8. I have Norton Antivurs pre-installed in the computer.

I use MapMyRides to track my rides, where I have been, performance improvements, etc. I import my rides to MMR directly from the Garmin using a USB connection.

PROBLEM: ever since I bought the new computer I cannot import rides directly from the Garmin to MMR. The program "sees" the Garmin, but when I try to import data, I get an error message indicating that my Garmin is not "recognized" by MMR.

Any one here have any idea what could be causing this problem? BTW, my Garmin and MMR can "talk" to each other with mynold laptop.

Many thanks.

Sounds a bit like how an mp3 player can be 'seen' but files aren't allowed to transfer unless it's synched or the device is associated with the computer. Sometimes there's a bit of DRM in the background that limits the number of possible 'pairings'.

If you were using Garmin Connect w/Communicator Plug-in, I'd suspect that the culprit might be Win8.

You might want to query the MMR help team and forums on this one. If it's related to the OS, you probably aren't the only one having this issue by now...

Yeah, you do need the Garmin Communicator plug-in and I don't know if MMR promps to install it if it's not present. Trying to connect via Garmin Connect will prompt you to install it. But I have no idea if that's how things will work with Win8.
