Can anyone recommend an affordable wired computer where I can set the odometer?
 

My cheap wireless computers I use on both of my bikes (same model on both) do not work at all when my new Cygolite headlight is in close proximity of the display. So I need a wired computer. I picked up another cheap wired computer that has most of the same functions, except for one important function missing: I can't set the odometer to whatever I want, which means it resets to zero whenever the battery is changed, and also I can't set it to match what my old odometer reading was (which I started when I first got the bike).

Any suggestions on something perhaps in the $20-$30 range that has a wired pickup, and also an odometer than can be set? My old computer referred to this as "odometer memory" which means you just had to remember what it was or write it down, then you could set it back to that number when changing the battery. :lol:

Looks like it has tons of features, including stem-mount capable which is something else I've been wanting.

I don't know about resetting the odometer, but the Cateye Astrale 8 has served me very well over the years. I have 2, and probably have had both for 10 years. They just keep going.

Any Planetbike wired or wireless computer will allow you to enter a beginning odometer reading for two bikes. I had good luck with several Planetbike models before I switched over to my Garmin.

Planet Bike Protoge 9. Uncluttered, big numbers, temperature, not expensive, and can have two setups.

Ah yes that Protege looks pretty nice. I saw that one yesterday and at first was a little put off by the "push up on the unit" as the button, but the more I think about it the more I think it's probably a good design. That is, if you can release it from the mounting bracket without screwing up data or anything else. I might look into it.

Astrale appears to be discontinued. I have 4 of the older Mity8 Cateye, dual buttons, which did allow odo reset. Oldest one died last month at 13yrs of age and the Velo8 single button I replaced it with
does NOT allow odo to be changed, though it does slide right into the Mity8 mount. Looks like all the Cateye are single button now and the few I looked at don't allow odo changes. But you can get a carbon offset!!! Protege9 list is $40.

The Cateye Strada (wired or wireless) can have the odometer set to a user value after a battery change. I imagine this is true of all cateyes.

I really like the Sigma BC1609 (will be the Sigma BC 16.12 in 2013). You can get a second sensor for a different bike or different wheel size which means no fiddling with changing wheel size and you can set the odo, the odo for the different wheels and the times for riding each bike as well as total time. You can also add a cadence sensor if you like. It's $35 to $40 from various places. Separate wheel sensor are about $15.

As an added bonus, the mount twists into place. I've lost lots of Cateyes because the mount breaks or I've popped them off when I hit them off-road riding.

Wallyworld usually has a 6 function Bell (wired) foranout $10. I have 2 and you can set the odometer

The one I got (and returned) did not allow the odometer to be set.

I've never seen one that didn't allow the odometer to be set. I just bought one from eBay for $6 shipped and it did, though it only allows setting up through 9999.9, even though it goes to 99,999 - design fault. I don't really care, I figure I can remember what 10,000 mile I'm on.

The $6 comp is actually perfectly adequate for me.

But of name brand ones, I have a Planet Bike Protege 9 that I really like. I had a Sigma a while back that was good to, a 1606 I think which I paid about $25 for on eBay new.

AFAIK, Just Trip Oddo is resettable on most, just like on your car, .. that knob..

I have a Sigma BC 1009. It's wired and you can set the total distance odometer to whatever you want. I believe you can also set the total elapsed time. I liked it so much that I bought another one for my "ride around work at lunchtime" bike that I keep in my office.

Performance Bike has had the Cateye Miteye 8 wired computers on sale for about $20 for a while now. I've got them on two bikes and they work well, with plenty of functions including odometer than can be reset.

Well I was going to get the Protege 9, but the LBS that carries PB stuff doesn't have the P9. So I went to my usual LBS that is big in Bontrager and Trek, and got the best wired computer which also includes wired cadence. But the way the wire is set up made it nearly impossible to get anywhere near a clean look on the bike. Plus I don't really need cadence anyway, so I guess I'll have to make another trip up there and exchange it for the next computer down, for $10 less, which does all the same stuff except doesn't read cadence.

Yeah, I was wondering why you went with one with cadence if the Protege 9 was your first choice.
Personally I don't really give a damn about look on my bike - my main bike is half hidden behind the racks, fenders, lighting cables, folding basket, speedo cables, and the bungee cord and cargo net that I have wrapped over the frame just in case I need to cinch something down. heck, when I needed to do a quick wiring re-route at work the other day I just slapped the wires down with some duct tape and I probably will just leave it like that until spring when I tear the bike down for spring cleaning.

To be honest, I got the Trip 3 because I had $50 birthday money burning a hole in my pocket and it was $45. But I think I'd rather have the Trip 2 w/o cadence for $35.

Thought about going for the lower-end Bontrager ANT+ computer for $25 more, but then saw that it doesn't come w/ sensors. :(

Many bikes in my collection are fitted with the old Avocet wire mounts. Whenever I find old Avocet 30s and 31s at veloswaps or on eBay, I buy them. I probably have six or seven on bikes and sitting around waiting for use. This universality makes it easy to have an odometer at hand. These things are tough and last forever. A model 31 got wet in Europe once and displayed a top speed of 124 mph. It worked fine again when it dried out.
