Garmin edge 510

Has anyone bought the new Edge 510?

How does it compare to the Edge 500?

Worth the upgrade?

Thanks for the info.

I do not own the 500 but recently purchased the 510. I was unable to pair the device with my Garmin Ant+ heart strap and either my Android phone or my wife's iPhone. Quite some time on the phone with Garmin too, to no avail. On the plus side, it picked up my cadence and speed sensor. On the brightest side, my reseller, bike+tires+direct dot com, has stood behind the sale and is shipping my another unit. I was looking forward to it and am hopeful that I may have just received a defective unit. I hope to shed more light in the not too distant future.

I just picked mine up today. I previously owned a 705 edge when they first came out. Nice unit but I didn't need the mapping. I've been without a GPS for a couple of years so the 510 was a no brainier for me. My wife will love the live tracking feature as I do a lot of loooong rides. Here's one of the best reviews I've read on the 510. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/01/g...th-review.html

I haven't used one, but from what I've read there is nothing wanting me to sell my 500.

the live tracking and auto updating in neat, but it comes at the cost of a much bulkier unit. Sure, weather updates are cool, but I've not no problem pulling my phone out of my pocket if indeed to check that. It's not likely you ned to continually monitor it.

my phone can track me so the garmin tracking would be a waste. I'll stick with the 500.

Does the Garmin Edge 510, only have touchscreen technology? I couldn't tell from the pictures' on Garmin's website.

yup, it's touch screen

Really weird. Got notification yesterday of upgraded firmware for the 510 (2.30). Installed it and the device then found my heart monitor and phone. For good measure, it also recognized the BT in my TV. Crazy!!!!

The Garmin Edge 500 doesn't?

The reason I am asking about touch screen technology, is because I do want to upgrade from the Garmin Edge 200 but, I don't like the touch screen technology.

1. I have fine-motor skill problems which makes the touch screen virtually impossible to use.

2. Regardless of my fine-motor skills problem, Garmin hasn't come up with a solution for when, all the oil secreted from a person's hand, destroys' the effectiveness of the screen.

How does the live tracking work? If paired with a cellphone, wouldnt it drain the phones battery as quickly as an app like Strava would?

No. 4 buttons on the sides.

The 500 would be the go then (instead of the 510). You pick up a few extras over the 200 (ANT+ devices).

Pretty sure that the smart phone type screen protectors (thin plastic films) would provide the protection needed.

Thanks for the feedback. While I was wondering whether the Edge 500 would be the right upgrade, you helped me make my decision.

Thank you for your responses. Today I was at my LBS and had a hands on look at the 510. It is a tad bigger than my 500, but a lot smaller than the 800 or 810.

It is a nice computer and all the function control buttons, including the touch screen, work quite well.

Not sure if the added functions are worth the price of the upgrade though.

Again, thanks for all the input.
