(snip) Except for the battery issue I see no reason to have a dedicated unit. Instead, I use at least as much space/weight for the batteries :-). W/ the two batteries I'm taking I should have to plug in more than every three or four days, minimum, even if the phone is on all the time. State parks, and sadly a few RV parks, so plenty of power. What kind of battery are you using yourself? My external battery is just an iPhone specific morphie juice pack with a 1500 mAh capacity and I thought that was pretty typical for an auxilary iPhone battery. Ocassionally I use specialized larger capacity batteries for offroad lighting, but a couple 5,600 Ah batteries will run 100W of lighting for a couple hours and thats considered lots of battery for a bicycle! You're using even more than that! 18,000 Ahs ?? Don't see why you were even concerned about battery drain, but recharge times must be interesting. Good luck on the trip Pete. When do you leave? |

MotionX will even do exactly what I want: send an email w/ GPS fix each hour. The problem is that either the GPS is on that whole hour, or the emails are only sent when the phone is unlocked and the app is in the foreground.

Is it true that the GPS is actively on during the whole hour, or just that it's enabled (meaning, if the software wants to turn it on, it can). Depending how the software is written, it could very well be true...
